Confused about the Fixer and Inspector

Featured Replies

To my amazement the manual of the DX10 Fixer doesn't even MENTION nVidia Inspector...! A lot if people (if not everyone?) use Inspector to take care of FSAA. Right now I have FSAA working perfectly fine in FSX with DX10 thanks to the 'old' guide and nVidia Inspector. I had a look at the options in the DX10 Fixer but the FSAA I use right now (4xS) isn't even available as an option in the Fixer. Furthermore I also use 4xSGSS because without it things look absolutely awful (shimmering cockpits). To my huge disappointment I read in the manual that the performance improving trick to let the clouds not be antialiased does NOT work when you use SGSS... BUMMER!

Now I was thinking about giving the Fixer's FSAA options a try but I have no clue at all what to do with Inspector...! Should I disable the FSAA and SGSS options in Inspector before I give the Fixer's options a try? Or does the Fixer override them? If so, does it also override SGSS...?

I think the total lack of information about this is a huge omission.

Hey, Jeroen: When you select a particular AA within the Fixer, it will create two entries in the [Display] section of the fsx.cfg. One of these is MultiSamplesPerPixel, and that same number (let's say "4") should be entered into the "Antialiasing - Transparency Supersampling" spot as "4x Sparse Grid Supersampling". Here is my own setting, and here are the settings, as set by the Fixer in the fsx.cfg.

[GRAPHICS]

MultiSamplesPerPixel=4
MultiSampleQuality=8

This gives me 8x CSAA   ....and here it is in the Fixer.

hello

sorry to interfere but i thought i was supposed to set AA setting to (4xs or 8xs etc... ) and also must i leave transparency multi sampling enabled ?

Ok, thanks, but er.... that means that NO ONE will be able to benefit from the Cloud shader fix... because that won't work with SGSS...?!? And as you say and as I found out you really NEED SGSS for decent FSAA!!! That's a bit odd. What's the use of that fix then? And btw maybe Steve can add this information to the manual because there is no way of knowing this any other way...!

Anyway, I fooled around with various settings and concerning Inspector I found out that it doesn't matter at ALL what FSAA setting you use there because the entries in the cfg do all the work! The manual says FSAA doesn't work in the nVidia CP and in the same way it doesn't work in Inspector. That's another question answered. ^_^

Right now I have in Inspector AA mode set to Override and AA setting set to Application controlled/Off. I used to have that set to 4xS for DX10 but apparently that wasn't needed at all!!! I have set AA using the Fixer at 4x and this added to my cfg the following:

MultiSamplesPerPixel=4
MultiSampleQuality=0

I used to have both set to 4 but with 4xSGSS the above settings (4 and 0) are just as good so apparently I was using higher settings than I actually needed. So maybe this little change in Inspector and the cfg may improve performance 0.1% or so.

I've tried to get the best aa to performance ratio in dx10. I have the same exact problem as J van E. It's a dead end.

In DX10, either you want good performance but jaggedy, terrible looking displays, or crisp and clean displays with nasty stutters and fps drop whenever there are clouds in the area.

But then again, I reeeaallly don't want to go back to dx9.  :(

Well, while using the free fixes I didn't have any real problems with clouds... Today the weather was all clear skies so I haven't tested it yet with the fixer but I can't imagine I now would have problems with clouds...! Did you try the free fixes before? Or is this your first encounter with DX10? Do you have a nVidia card or ATI?

Nvidia GTX 780, I had the free fixer 3.2.2. I've been using dx10 for about a week trying out the fixer, but I've always had a problem getting a good aa setting without getting stutters and cloud fs problems that I get ZERO of in dx9.

Try it! Set overcast clouds and slew mode into them using 4xsgss. It stutters heavily.

Now try 8xss in dx9 which is essentially the same as 4xsgss in dx10. Much better frames,no stutters.

I'm not sure how that helps my issue, but nice pics!

Hi David!

"Try it! Set overcast clouds and slew mode into them using 4xsgss. It stutters heavily."

You seemed to be having a good time with Jeroen, but the comment above suggested to me that you were not asking for help, but in angrily stating that  DX10 "stutters heavily".

I'm not averse to helping you at all, David, but stand-offish and aggressive comments don't help your issue, either.

Sooooo.... How about we just smile nice, be friends, and I'll be glad to see what we can do to get rid of some jaggies and make smooth those clouds!!

First we can't do anythink without looking at your fsx.cfg, so - if you would, please - copy and rename it as "David_fsx.txt" and attach it to your post (using the "More reply opyions" at the bottom-right of the screen)... Then - a screen shot of your Inspector settings, if you will.

You have a great GPU, with a modest 4770k overclock, so we should get some good figures - OK!

All the Best,  :wink:

peej.

Peej,

Can you post your SweetFX settings?  Those are amazing pics brother.

uhh... I never meant it aggressively.  :huh:

I'm just a bit aggravated at the performance I'm getting with clouds in the area. Excuse the tone, then.

How will I show the cfg? just paste the whole thing into the post?

No - start a reply to this, but look down at the bottom-right corner of this window - and you will see "More Reply Options" sitting there. If you click it, it will modify the screen, and there will be a process at the bottom, which you can use to attach your renamed fsx.cfg to the post. This way it comes as a straight text file, and not as a long list of words that have to be copied to a "proper" text editor, to ensure it is a proper "txt" file. The browsers all have tendencies to add little hidden characters, here and there. As I said - just copy the fsx.cfg, and then rename that copy as "David_fsx.txt" and then use the More reply option to attache to the post.

You da Man!

 I'll give it a look and see if there's anything strange.....

Yup - a coupla things in the wrong spot, and I've changed or removed a few items, David.

Next - where can post you NI settings, or perhaps, if you want to setup a fresh Inspector, download this one and import it into Inspector.

So - export your old Inspector FSX profile, and import the new one, then copy the changed fsx.cfg into FSX, and start FSX, and let's see where she goes.

Take your time, as I have to disappear for a hour or two (domestic duties...)

Good Luck.
