October 22, 201312 yr How fast does it take you to start up FSX? How are your framerates? I just reinstalled everything clean after running out of room on my 500GB SSD. I bought and installed an additional 250GB SSD to hold my mesh scenery. My system is a Dell XPS 8500; Intel Core I7-3770 @ 3.4GHZ with 8GB RAM. I have only FSX and my Orbx scenery on the 500GB SSD including FTX Global. I have all the Pilots FS Global Ultimate meshes on the second 250GB SSD as well as the backup files for FTX Global. My C drive is a 1TB standard disk drive. My startup time when starting FSX is 3 min 11 sec. That seems a bit long. While flying my frame rates (locked at 30FPS) run about 25-30 over rural unpopulated areas but drops to about 11-12 FPS when landing at Aerosoft's San Francisco Mega Airport. I'm beginning to wonder if I might be better off dumping the SSDs and getting another 1 TB standard drive to put all the flightsim stuff on. Comments? Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
October 22, 201312 yr I'm confused about what you are trying to achieve? Adding additional SSDs won't change anything, especially not fps. SSDs are a good idea if you want to reduce load times. Everything you said above regarding the performance of your current system sounds about right. If people boast about 30fps at Mega airports then they are making some major sacrifices to settings to achieve that. -Iain Watson-
October 22, 201312 yr Everything you said above regarding the performance of your current system sounds about right. 3 min 11 sec to start FSX doesn't sound right to me...! Noel, is that the time until you seen the main menu or until you see the plane in the game after clicking Fly now?
October 22, 201312 yr 3 min 11 sec to start FSX doesn't sound right to me...! Noel, is that the time until you seen the main menu or until you see the plane in the game after clicking Fly now? I have FS Global Ultimate mesh, and have equally long load times. If the progress bar stops and holds at 6 percent, it is definitely the cause. On my system, if I disable the mesh, load time drops to about 30 seconds. I don't think the mesh is being loaded into memory - at least not all of it - but it appears to be a file indexing operation, as the HD runs continuously during the 3-minute pause at the 6 percent point. If I exit then re-load FSX, it loads much more quickly the second and subsequent times. It only has the long pause on the first load after a reboot. October 22, 201312 yr The load times are directly proportional to how much scenery addons and other additions like aircraft. I have over 600 layers of scenery and 100s of planes. As a result my load times are very slow...I have time to go and enjoy a cup of coffee. I have never timed it. Also, if you make any changes to the scenery cfg and scenery indexing this will result in substantially longer load times. So if you are using Orbx central switchers between flights then the sim has to recompile and reindex the new settings every time. Bryan Wallis aka "fltsimguy" Maple Bay, British Columbia Near CAM3
October 22, 201312 yr Author Igloo. I got the second 250 GB SSD for my Pilots mesh scenery to free up room on my 500 GB SSD on which my FSX and Orbx scenery are located. J van E, I have several startup flights for my primary aircraft to load at various airports. I have icons on the desktop to start the flights. The time is from when I click on the desktop icon until the aircraft is ready to start. When I just go to the menu the time is 47 seconds. Jim, yes, most of the time is when it stops at when loading mesh at 6%. I guess that explains it. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
October 23, 201312 yr I have FSGenisis but not many addon planes or scenery on my SSD, and with LOD at 6.5 it all loads up in under 60sec. With LOD at 4.5 the load times reduce by 20 sec or so.
October 24, 201312 yr Same here, as JRBarrett I have FS Global Ultimate, ALL of it, on a separate HD, away from the FSX SSD, so I´m waiting at 6% like the rest of you with, or without SSD´s! FS Genesis don´t do that, on my laptop it loads fairly quick.
October 25, 201312 yr MyTrafficX is the main cause of FSX taking longer to load to the main menu for me. Without MTX, my FSX main menu is loaded within 10 seconds and that's only loading from a WD HDD. With MTX, it's about 35 seconds. From clicking on the 'Fly Now' button to actually flying takes about 1 1/2 minutes. With my SSD it was nearer 1 minute.
