Complex, High Level / Quality simulations in X-Plane 10...

I am giving a lot more time to the FF WL 777 now that I am fully concentrated in X-Plane 10. It was good to really start flying it, comparing it to the PMDG offer I was using with FSX was not a bad idea ( I ended up preferring the way this on flies!, and that was one of the reasons for my definite move to X-Plane 10, although I agree that the interface and functionality, instruments options and attention to details in the PMDG are far superior to those of the 777 we have in X-Plane 10)

Flying a complex simulation is not what wer're up to every time. Sometimes ( most times ) we just want to fly a small circuit, test a scenery area, a weather situation, train a procedure, etc... There are some excellent aircraft for doing that kind of "flying", and even good GA x-country. Excellent examples are the Carenados - the three I have are probably my preferred GAs for X-Plane 10, together with Tkyler's MU-2J.

A couple of days ago I finally decided to get the Felis An-24. I am still reading through the Manual, and feeling overwhelmed by the extent of detail and complexity in this simulation. I often start the sim just to test some feature I read in the manual and see how it works. Not knowing anything about the operation of the real thing I have to rely on what the manual says, but heck! this aircraft is a charm to use and to fly!!!!

I haven't yet got the Saab 340, although I intend to, but the price level on that one is forcing it towards a more Christmas-like acquisition, and then, there's that FF 757 about to be released too, and SkyMAXX Extreme, and.... whow!

At least, concentrating in only one sim is a lot easier to manage ( keeping an eye on Aerofly FS and doing at least one session in it everyday :-), and looking forward for the upcoming JustFlight offers for that sim and for it's v2... ).

I have also been taking some time to tweak a few aircraft in X-Plane 10. The FF WL 777 200 is the one that is taking the more time to "fine-tune" using Plane-Maker's Artificial Stability menus. X-plane is in fact unique in allowing us to use PM, that great tool, to edit our aircraft and learn many things about flight modeling in  the X-Plane platform. If I arrive to what I consider to be a satisfactory set of tweaks allowing for a plausible interpretation of Boeing's Electronic Flight Control System, specially in what concerns the pitch and roll axis ( the yaw axis was already taken care by the 777 devs ), I will certainly post it here :-)

Ah... Will we have a Carenado "Beech Twin" in the near future???

I recommend getting the Saab. It's a lovely plane. However it's EXTREMELY hard on my FPS, so I have to fly it in quite desolate areas.

Seconded on the Saab it's and excellent plane. Re the frame rates Ricahrd, I am not sure that you have been following the thread at X-Aviation but they are due to soon release a first patch which, if the figures are to be believed will drastically increase the fps.

Felis's AN-24 was my first X-Plane purchase and to this day I still find it tough to land, get the decent rate to high and bang goes the under carriage.

I love the AN-24 ... but have never succeeded doing a cold and dark. There are a couple of tutorials .. in Russian; which I can't speak or understand and the few written tutorials that are around are either deficient or assuming some prior information or condition that I don't know anything about ... in fact, my slight predicament with the AN-24 is what has been holding me back from ever purchasing the Yak-40; which I understand is also a good airplane! I know that it is a case where I have to take baby steps and be thorough ... that's sometimes difficult for me lol!

The SAAB is absolutely fantastic, VERY immersive and VERY satisfying to fly when procedures are followed correctly, plus it has arguably the BEST training/checklists I've seen in X-Plane to date. It does have a memory leak currently, though Cameron has informed us on his forum that the leak is now fixed .. along with a bunch of other improvements and bug fixes.

I have been watching how the SAAB interacts with my PC quite closely ... and can tell you that my GPU rarely goes over 30% running the SAAB with my normal settings ... roughly High/Medium with HDR off (I'll post those maybe if anyone's interested .. but too lazy now as I have to get some sleep .. work tomorrow). The CPU however gets a hammering ... and I notice that three of my 4 cores go quite high, with my 4th core going sometimes to 100%. X-Plane measures my CPU @ 98% mostly when the SAAB is running ... so the guys @ X-Pilot are correct, the SAAB is CPU intensive.
