Backing Up

Featured Replies

I already have a Disk Image of my Windows 7, but I'm wondering if I can just backup the actual FSX directory (50GB or so) and delete it, to free up some space (Got a little tired of FSX, going to have some fun with DCS - WarThunder) (Don't worry I will be back) But I've read a lot of topics on this sort of thing, and I as long as I don't try to put my FSX directory into another HD it should be ok... Like if I just drag it right back on to the same HD it's on right now everything should work right with the registries right? Or how is this going to work? I only want to delete the FSX directory as it's the 50GB, and I will not be uninstalling aircraft/scenery from my "Installed" Library, so the registries should remain there? Is this method going to work?

I'm thinking it won't. When you load a program, Windows stores the locations of files and how they interact. You would have to reload it from the disks. Now you CAN copy you Simobjects directory to a disk and then copy it back onto the newly reloaded FSX so you don't have to reload third-party addons again from their installation files.

Ok... Except I would also need there modules, gauges, textures ETC. I get what your saying but I don't think that idea will work.

if  you  used a  payware back up  like  acronis true image ( or some thing  similar) than you will be  able to, some  one will confirm this

I used Acronis to clone my entire old hdd to a bigger new one, it's true that you will save many days of reinstalling everything but remember that some payware add ons need to be reinstalled again because of licenses that do not work just moving all the data from one hdd to another (this was my case) and not to mention that you need to reactivate FSX and perhaps your Windows copy if is OEM.

To the OP--I have done what you're describing--removing the directory and restoring it to the same place later works OK.  Problems can arise with some software if you were to reformat the HDD after removing the software (which would assign it a new volume serial number), but if you just remove it and restore it to the same path on the same drive, things should work OK.
