Gigabyte or Zotac?

Featured Replies

I'm just about to pull the plug on a GTX770 4gb card and I thought it would be wise to ask a few of you for opinions. Basically there are two cards which just about fall into my budget, that's the Gigabyte and the Zotac. I know there won't be a great deal to choose between them, but has anyone got any opinions? Cheers fellas... BTW, the Gigabyte model has three fans and the Zotac two...

Gigabyte. Zotac always looks cheap and nasty to me. Just an opinion mind you.

Howard, I would seriously consider a 780 3GB over a 770 4GB unless the price difference is really out of your comfort zone, especially if you have this in mind for P3D v2

Just curious Howard, is this by chance the gigabyte model you're looking at?

Following this thread with great interest because I was thinking seriously about pulling the trigger on the above card myself.

Also thanks Glenn for your input in the other thread and here as well. For me $389 for the above card is already out of my comfort zone, lol. The 780 is about $100 more which is about what Verizon is going to charge me just to download P3D2 and I need to keep a really tight rein on the budget especially this time of year. I'm just using a single 27" 1920x1080 monitor and while I do fly the sim for fun occasionally, I really just need to get up and running with P3D2 ASAP for development purposes. Given the above I should be OK with the 770 wouldn't you think?

Am I missing anything? As an example I almost bought a CH joystick once but a forum poster pointed out that the stick I was looking at didn't have a Z axis for rudder and saved me from making that mistake, so I'm looking for that sort of input. I can live with a stutter here and there or 20 FPS as opposed to 25 in heavy autogen, but I just don't want to find out later that the card I bought doesn't support something I'll need like the new P3D2 ground shadows or something?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Glenn, thanks for the input. In the end I opted for an MSI card. Sure, I could consider the 780, but to be frank I really can't afford the 770! The 780 was another £100...

Hi Jim, no not Newegg, this is the card... http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-msi-gtx-770-twin-frozr-ii-28nm-pcie-30-7010mhz-gddr5-gpu-1046mhz-boost-1085mhz-cores-1536-dport-

as for recommendation for the 770, there has been a lot of guys on the forum who swear by it. Sure, you can always go one better, that's life.

MSI....good choice. I have been very happy with my MSI 570

770 will be fine. It supports all DX11 and V2 features. I am doing 'ok' with a 570. Its just if I was getting a new card right now, I think the 780 would trump the 770, especially if I was looking at the 4GB 770 version. Its a lot of money either way!!

I really dont think we have seen the last of price cuts for the nvidia 770 and 780 series. Once the R9 290 gets better cooling solutions I think the pressure will be on to reduce prices even more. Im going to hold out for a little while longer.

I should have done that, I'm just too easily swayed!

Hi Howard,

Did you find the time to install your new card and if so, what is your impression?

Is the upgrade worth the money and efforts?

Happy landings

Hi Till, well, I got the 770 with the idea of installing P3Dv2 and with 4gb of memory it would be very useful. However, even with FSX it has been a worthy upgrade. There has been a small increase in overall frames of about 5% but about a 20/25% increase in performance in clouds. It has also helped with smoother flying, but I have also noticed better performance around airports. What I really like is there seems to be less impact in heavy weather like there was with my 580, so when the weather is dirty and I'm at a big airport then the impact is far less than it ever used to be. Also, I was plagued with graphical artifacts when flying at some really big airports, in fact at CYVR I more or less gave up on it. I played around with the BP tweak for weeks without any success. Now I have it installed with hires textures and I have no flashing at all!
