I read in the manual to turn autogen to off but I only have 8 states and one hi res city of photo scenery.  How do I manage when I am flying over other areas that aren't photo realistic?

Just leave your autogen set on. It won't display in photoreal areas but then will be there when you get to a non-photoreal area. If you are flying in only photoreal areas, then you can completely turn autogen off and gain some additional performance.

You can turn autogen on and off on the fly.  If you go outside a MSE area, simply go into Display and turn autogen back on.

It is not essential to turn autogen off. I often forget to do that and have few problems. YMMV however. But as Jim says, you can flick it on and off on the fly if needed.
