Failed to flatten...

Featured Replies

The plane was not in slew mode.I was actually taxiing under power. I think slew mode

would give the lifting effect that you have reported. Is it possible that the author

of "vhhh2005b" made this structure to hide the difference in levels when he placed

the airport.Perhaps you could contact him.

Mornin' all.

It was a bit wet on the road this morning... Just wringing me socks out here and I'll be right with you.

OK Dave, great.

Are you sure, Colin? If you fly at midday it's hardly visible, but early morning it's pretty obvious. Shall I post a screenshot? If you really don't have this effect, then 'the plot thickens'!

I had a long Saturday playing around with two versions of VHHH by T Kwong and found the following:

I started by examining VHHH2004b which was pretty poor: the same nasty flattens and bgl contents and it also brought my framerate down to about 6 per second. I thought I'd have a quick look at VHHH2005 before giving up in disgust and was pleased to find about 20 fps, enough of a boost to continue.

Did you notice there are in fact two flattens in the package? There's one in the scenery.cfg entry and another (inaccessible) in that bgl. Between them they mean anyone who has this package will have the problem.

As the rogue bgl contains a mixture of stuff including airport ground textures, the bad flatten and afd-type runway surface objects it's not possible without a decompiler and a good working knowledge of xml (something I don't have) to edit it. I tried all sorts of stuff with various flattens...

... but the best I managed was to tidy up the flatten by modifying the developer's scenery.cfg entry. Config entries seem to take precedence over everything else. I widened the flatten-to-zero and added a flatten-to-19-feet. Then I chipped a little bay out of the west end with another sea-level flatten. I've cut them a bit close in a couple of places but they're easy to tweak.

It seems you can add as many as you like so if you feel like it, keep chipping away with small quadrilaterals until the 19 foot piece fits the land properly. The co-ordinates for each scenery.cfg flatten are in the order top left, top right, bottom right, bottom left. I found them just by slewing in top-down view.

T Kwong's flatten at 19 feet is a bit rough & ready so try replacing it with the lines below. Unfortunately we're stuck with quadrilateral flattens if we do it that way but I've managed to pull things in a little so they're a little less obvious. It does leave the approach light gantries in mid-air but you'll probably only be concentrating on them at night so I think that's acceptable.

(I left out the square brackets cos they're used for various post formats & didn't want to confuse the server)

Here's the solution above, in a picture:

Mixing stuff in one bgl is p**-poor design and wallpapering over it with a scenery.cfg flatten is just plain lazy. That's what I've done though, isn't it?

It wouldn't have taken any extra effort to compile ground, scenery objects, excludes and flattens into separate bgls so that owners of customised sims could mould the package to suit their installation. Ah well, it was made in 2004 so if I ever meet T Kwong I'll be buying the beers.

Now that the sea is sorted out I actually like this airport enough to keep it.

Cheers,

D

My year's 'sabbatical' just came to an end, so I am back at work from today! Not easy ..

I'll check this out as soon as I can, now that my time is no longer my own! Looks interesting - I didn't get around to changing the flattens in the scenery.cfg file..

I'll trade you some of that wet for a whole lot of powdery white frozen stuff!

Nice work Dave. Thanks for the effort and the information.

The wall of water is now much closer to the airport and the overall effect is miles better.. Well done!

I'd happily take you up on that. Off topic I know but since the problem's solved I'm feeling rebellious so here's my winter 2013 followed by winter 2014:

2013, North Wales:

Martin, I'm glad it's sorted. If you feel the need, adding other little flattens is easy enough if a bit monotonous.

Best regards,

D

Yes,I added one or two more, but you have to be careful they don't touch the airport or there's trouble! Pity that one doesn't seem to be able to make custom polygons, just rectangles, or more could be done.
