January 24, 201412 yr I posted this in the Avsim FSX forum but didn't get much luck, I have recently been flying my PMDG 777 and found that it is simply unplayable at the FPS I attain as opposed to what I am trying to attain. My monitor is a Samsung 22" LCD set at 60hz refresh. I can achieve 60FPS in flying situations but on the ground, 30-40 is pretty much what I see all the time, this sounds good but on my screen it looks like a slideshow, especially when it drops <30, that is when I just close the sim in frustration. I have read about the 1/2 refresh rate tweak which I guess gives smoothness at 30FPS, ideal for me, if the sim was to be smooth then running at 30 is not a problem. My problem is I simply cannot effectively apply this setting, I have set it in Inspector and I get rock solid 30FPS at all times using no frame lock at all, there are no fluctuations and my FPS never goes below 30 at all but the screen is simply not smooth, it is like I have artificially limited performance and things look like a slideshow. Is there something I am doing wrong with this tweak because I would not call 1/2 refresh at 30FPS smooth at all? The only method of achieving a smooth and happy sim for me is running at 60FPS but that is pretty much impossible with the PMDG 777 and other additional addons. I have even removed autogen, AI traffic and sometimes scenery BGL's just to try and facilitate that higher level of 60FPS. I have attached an image of my Inspector, is there anything I can do to make this sim smooth without trying to achieve my refresh rate in FPS. Lawrence Ashworth
January 24, 201412 yr Looking at your PC specs I notice you only have 1GB of vidio memory..........not enough you will need a bit more to do what you desire the PMDG is memory hungry at least 12 GB is needed to run it smoothly....

You don't need 12GB to run FSX smoothly. I can't be much more help with the actual issue, I dropped FSX & forgotten a lot of the tweaks/settings - sorry!
January 24, 201412 yr Author Looking at your PC specs I notice you only have 1GB of vidio memory..........not enough you will need a bit more to do what you desire the PMDG is memory hungry at least 12 GB is needed to run it smoothly.... My FPS is okay I think, I can run things rock solid at 30FPS except in larger airports, the T7 runs perfectly around 40-50 but as soon as it drops below that, it doesn't look great. I just have seen many people run their simulators at 30FPS citing it as the smoothest experience so as I am able to run 30FPS quite good I thought I'd try and attain a more smooth experience. When I set this though, 30FPS is completely unplayable and not smooth so I'm more wondering about the tweak and how it should be applied. Lawrence Ashworth
January 24, 201412 yr 1 GB video ram is enough, suggesting 12 GB is ridiculous. I only get around 15 fps near a busy airport but the 777 is still super smooth for me. I'd love to be able to get 30 fps in that situation. Still, if approx 30 fps is not smooth enough try reducing the locked frame rate to 25 fps.
January 24, 201412 yr I agree that 1 GB VRAM could imply a bottleneck, but you should be fine with your 8 GB physical RAM. And I wish I had 30 fps each and everywhere ... What happened to AVSIM
January 25, 201412 yr your hardware is fine ....just need it to mesh with the software. Skip the message about "1/2 refresh rate" for now, but do not skip the "lock your frame rate" part. message found here: http://forum.avsim.net/files/file/41-basic-fsx-p3d-configuration-guide/ ROG Maximus X Apex Z370 -- 8086 @ 5.3 / NB 5.0 -- GSkill @ 4133 c17-17-32~Cr1 1.42v -- EVGA 1080Ti 6393 -- ROG PG279Q 1440P 150hz -- Corsair H100i V2 --Samsung EVO 850(s) -- Windows7 Pro 64 --Corsair 750X Ken C
January 25, 201412 yr I have 16GB RAM and even with several addons running at once my total RAM usage is below 6GB. Video RAM, I have 1GB and this gets me 30fps apart from high detail airports. Wes Meyer
