FSX. My disaster of FPS

Featured Replies

Going to jump straight in and say at FSDT aiprorts such as KLAX, KDFW and also LatinVFR's KMIA. Using GSX for push or boarding drops when in PMDG aircraft (737,747,777) my FPS between 2-6 when taxiing and taking off. Trying to takeoff when FSX is playing like power point is almost impossible. Also one other time when trying to land at FSDT KDFW the FPS dropped and the slideshow so I ended up quitting FSX and never completing the flight. Once I am out of these airports the FPS jumps back to 20-25 when about 1,500 feet after takeoff. I am using ASN and REX 4 textures. Clouds are at 2048x and airports 1024 in REX 4. I am also using DX10. I almost forgot even at FB KSFO when in foggy conditions to be expected at KSFO my FPS using GSX drops to around 5-10 and as I said before after takeoff back to 30. Indeed this is CHEESE as I would say meaning disappointing.

Specs

Alienware X51

Win 8.1

I7 3770 3.4 (No overclock)

Geforce 660 1.5 ram

8GB ram

FSX sliders are maxed but both autogens and water. Light bloom ticked, clouds distance at 60,

Nvidia inspector 4 sgss with dx 10 and the fixer is at 8x csaa

My CFG. Ran through ventubo then usded Word Not Allowed's tweaks. Left affinity mask at 254 as I tested is best for my performance

Sounds about right. 3.4 ghz is low (most of us are 4-4.5)and 660 isn't enough vid card for dx10, bloom, maxed autogen, 2048 textures, and high aa. Heavy clouds will hit fps hard with high aa and sgss. 2048 makes it even worse. Dial back settings and start with dx9. Get that stable and the performance where you want and then try dx10.

I was pleased with DX9 performance and that is why I moved to DX10.

Also at any other airport that is not an addon. With overcast conditions, I am still getting 20-25 fps.

Your frame rates seem low for the hardware you have. Your chip runs at a max factory OC of 3.8 or 3.9 btw - Intel speed boost is a form of overclocking. Boosting the turbo multiplier up to 4.2 (a realistic clock speed for Ivy Bridge) or even 4.4 (not quite as realistic given the increased heat of a 22nm design) will help, but it won't be a day/night difference. The emphasis put on clock speeds here is a bit too much imo.

Looking at your config it appears you have multiple entries in the "trusted" list for the same module. I suggest cleaning up the CFG by deleting and starting over. First backup the controls file at AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX/Controls. This will make the starting-over process 10x easier as you won't have to re-input your control preferences. Start FSX and allow it to make a new config. When you are establishing the sliders for this new config be conservative. Start the sliders in the middle, don't go overboard on water effects or autogen, and turn down your car traffic (16% is asking for problems). Don't use known FPS killers like bloom either. Also, keep your FPS unlimited. If your FPS ever rise above 40 consistently, you can lock it to 30 but otherwise keep it unlimited. I would also seriously reconsider DX10 or 2048 textures until you have everything running smoothly. Once you've got that new CFG, run it through the Bojote tweaking site http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html making sure to enter all your hardware variables correctly. Once you slip the bojote CFG in there, you can copy/overwrite the new controls file with your old backup. Test this out again and let us know.

Just jumped into FSX. I change the cloud resolution and took off light bloom. I say my FPS increased 5-8. Now I am getting between 24-40 FPS at KLAX with the NGX. Only thing is when looking around quickly my frames will drop to about 20 sometimes 18, but when I stop they increase once again. Will test tomorrow with overcast condtions. Expecting to drop between 15-20 maybe lower. We shall see.

Do not use Venetubo to tweak with modern hardware. Unless you want to have issues.

Those numbers seem more appropriate. I would still encourage you to perform a CFG cleaning (like going to the dentist, it's a pain, but should be done regularly) and be conservative with expectations. FSX has a whole lot of stuff to calculate. I recently had to give up UTX night lighting because I realized it was not worth the FPS anymore. Sure, the lights look beautiful, but it also looks beautiful (and arguably more realistic) without them. And the same software that makes the lights look pretty also needs to calculate engine rpm/power, lift/drag of wings, flight plan and distance to next leg, proximity to the closest airports with acceptable runway length, virtual cockpit buttons and knobs, complex ND displays... when you really start to think about it, it's pretty crazy what FSX has to do. Anyway, good luck and please let us know how things work out.

Ethan Edelson

All those tweaks are overkill.

Just use highmemfix=1 (google it) and set up nvidia inspector using the "setting up FSX and how to tune it" (guide just google it).

Agreed stick with dx9 until you get the hang of FSX.

And keep bloom off... Instant performance killer.

I don't see a reason to establish anything under dx9. With dx10 scenery fixer you can start and make a good setup under dx10. My dx9 performance was tragic when compared to dx10. And I can keep all bells and whistles running

In the tweaks department:

1. Set affinity (14 for 4 cores without ht)

2. Highmemfix as above said

Rest is your settings and overclocking of hardware

So just went through some performance tests all with the NGX. Very happy with what I have been getting at my add-on airports. FPS rarely falling below 15; between 25-35 FPS when inside the cockpit of the ngx in FSDT KLAX; and 40+ FPS at FB KSFO and 30 FPS in the VC. Even with overcast conditions I still achieved 25+ at FB KSFO and FT KBOS, but went down to 15-20 at KLAX inside the VC outisde more or less the same story. Still will do the CFG clean up but I say the biggest killer of FPS was the clouds at 2048. Have not noticed a big difference with 1024 clouds and 2048. To finish up: Performance is great and light bloom does not affect my FPS at all. Maybe loss of 1-3 but I will be leaving it on at the moment.

Dane Quartel

How odd. I was just writing in another thread how one feature affected my VAS while someone else found it did not.

The fact that bloom doesn't hurt your fps is amazing to me - that always dropped mine like a rock.

Lovely FSX.

Your trying to pull a loaded Semi Trailer with a Pickup truck. Like mentioned above you are going to need to overclock if possible and spend sometime tweaking, not too much, just stick with one guide for now till you get familiar with FSX. You are going to learn so much about how this software works and in the end you will love it or hate it like so many do now. Yes, I love it!
