February 17, 201412 yr I'm a real world private pilot and have been using FS Flight Simulator for 30 years. I've also recently started using X-Plane v10. It's a little tough to decipher exactly what license is needed for P3D, but it looked like a Professional license is needed. Is that correct? $199 is kind of steep, so I wanted to get opinions. I have a high end overclocked system and many FSX add ons. What does P3D provide for $199 that I'm not getting in FSX? It appears to still be based on the 32 bit engine, so OOM crashes are not alleviated. Just looking for guidance on licensing and if it's worth the rather hefty investment. Thanks!
February 17, 201412 yr Honestly, at this stage, if you just want to fly without hassle, FSX is the better choice. Otherwise, if you want to involve yourself a bit in the evolution of what P3Dv2 hopefully will become, and are willing to go over a few bumps along the way, P3Dv2 can be very rewarding. It really isn't an easy recommendation to make. In 6 months or so, hopefully it will be a bit more clear, one way or the other. As far as licensing, we don't really like to get into that here, as it's really the kind of thing that is between you and LM. Sorry I can't offer anything more there. Regards,Brian Doney
February 17, 201412 yr Author Thanks Brian. Can others offer me what version they purchased for comparison? I'm not trying to cheat on the license, in fact the opposite. I want to be sure I have the correct license.
February 17, 201412 yr It's not much use asking what license others bought without telling you why. What if by accident only those who bought the pro license answered this question? You might as well toss a coin to decide what license to get. ^_^ And as Brian already said, it's between you and LM: we aren't allowed to talk about this here. I will PM you my thoughts about it though. ^_^
February 17, 201412 yr 1: You buy for qualification you buy one you think is qualify for you. 2: You buy with wallet you buy less expensive for you. 1 or 2 is almost same in pc just between you and LM no asking who you are. Olga Vankranendonk
February 17, 201412 yr If it was possible I would sell you my license for $150  But you cant do that  I would say that that P3DV2 checkout is going to have cob-webs on it soon from lack of use. My rule with FS is to what for a long time after release of a product before I buy it. See what the feedback is like. I broke that rule With P3DV2 and now I fell burned. Give it a year or so
February 17, 201412 yr For simulation, training and learning = Professional license. Students discount = Academic license. http://www.prepar3d.com/product-overview/prepar3d-license-comparison/ Sascha Rieger | EVO Developer What is EVO • How to get Evo 2016 • FS9 Evolution Forum
February 17, 201412 yr The license agreement is kind of a Rorschach test. People see in it what they want to. I paid the $200 because that is how I saw it. Other perfectly good and honest people read it differently. P3D is definitely still a work in progress. If you haven't seen it yourself you may be surprised how much it looks and feels like FSX. You won't see any huge difference visually, the flight model is unchanged, the ATC is the same, etc. Hopefully the changes that have been made in the code will allow third party developers to make big improvements. Apparently the "hooks" are in the code to make that possible. But as you say many of the old problems people had with FSX are still there. Micro-stutters, OOM errors etc are still around. I find I still fly FSX more than P3D, but I am happy to be part of the new sim's birth pangs. That is what it really comes down to at this point. If you want that experience, go ahead and buy it. Otherwise it wouldn't hurt to wait another six months. - Bill Magann
February 17, 201412 yr I'm a real world private pilot and have been using FS Flight Simulator for 30 years. Professional license is needed. Is that correct? $199 is kind of stepe... Dude if you're an Un-educated pilot, you would be dead, therefore you're a smart pilot, therefore you're constantly studying and educating yourself to upgrade your skills, therefore you are a life-time student of aviation... Right? Right??? therefore get the student/educational edition PDv2.1 WITH Estonia migration tool is hands-down the best choice when considering FSX versus P 3-D.
