March 4, 201412 yr I'm really in love with Flight Gear 3 and with this model too :-) Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
March 4, 201412 yr Moderator Besides the plane, the scenery is also quite impressive. I was having a look at Google Earth the other day, and all the 3D cities/buildings (along with the lighting effects in Google Earth), and wondering how/why we don't have this in a flight simulator yet. No only does it perform well and smoothly, it also looks good. I believe FlightGear can use Google Earth and the models, so it's something I'm watching very closely.
March 4, 201412 yr Author Yes, the scenery in V2 is still under development, but already very plausible, at least for me. Mesh is very good, and the OSM-based info is also very useful for VFR. But the osgEarth alternative is a "must look at..." too: Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
March 4, 201412 yr Moderator We need this Most of these models have been created by users and uploaded to Google Earth. This already looks better than any scenery currently possible in any flight simulator, add some clouds, weather, on top of this, and we'd have an incredibly realistic looking flight simulator. If FlightGear could stream scenery like this into the flight simulator, I'd dump X-Plane in an instant ;-)
March 4, 201412 yr Author Looks great Tony! I wasn't even aware of such detail & quality ! Will have to look at it - thx for the info! March 4, 201412 yr Most of these models have been created by users and uploaded to Google Earth. Google is a bad idea: their EULA is pure crap. People post their content and artwork for free, and no one can use it outside Google Earth. OpenStreetMap contributors (and OSM 3D) are using the ODbL license. This is the way to go for new 3D features in flight simulators: http://k1z.blog.uni-heidelberg.de/2013/12/05/heidelberg-3d-and-beyond/ Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
March 4, 201412 yr Moderator OpenStreetMap contributors (and OSM 3D) are using the ODbL license. This is the way to go for new 3D features in flight simulators:http://k1z.blog.uni-...-3d-and-beyond/ I now use the OSM 3D information in my application, but it's very sparse and restricted to a smattering of a few buildings in many cities (some look good, but nowhere near as good as real models with textures). I think people just don't know that it even exists. Plus, the 3D buildings are very very basic, and restricted to parts of buildings and 3D shapes. For real 3D buildings in OSM, we have a long way to go, not to mention the tools to create them and view them. The 3D editor inside JOSM is very basic and I think just puts people off. I also completely agree about Google, It's sad and actually makes me a little angry that people have put so much effort into the buildings for Google, but won't for something like OSM. Although they can be used I believe, generally the buildings are made up off too many parts, and lots of texture sheets. Generally people have used it to show off their 3D modelling abilities, as opposed to making efficient models that can be reasonably used in a flight simulator, and trust me I've tried to convert them, but lots of them are just to complicated to be used in numbers inside X-Plane.
