Fsx freezes then crashes straight to desktop

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

On a number of occasions my fsx freezes for around 30 to 40 seconds and then crashes straight to the desktop. I have checked event logs and a app crash viewer program but nothing was reported as a crash by these programs. It has happened on multiple occasions for example I was flying from LA to Paris and it crashed to desktop after 10 hrs of flying also it happened when landing into Heathrow. I have tried such methods as unticking scenery and also reverting back to DX9 but that didn't solve the problem. I have also tried making a new cfg but this doesn't seem to resolve the problem.

There has been a number of application hangs that have been going on in the background from a livecomm.exe file which has shown up in event logs this may be a factor but I checked when a CTD happened and nothing has come up as a crash or app hang but the hangs might be related to the crashes.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S Here are my pc specs:

Core i5 4670k

GTX 760 Overclocked

Watercooling

8GB Ram

2TB HDD

Fsx acceleration with sp1 and sp2.

Thanks

Have you applied any of the FSX.cfg edits?  You will find them in the configuration guide

http://forum.avsim.net/files/file/41-basic-fsx-p3d-configuration-guide/

You might be able to reduce your CTD's with the guide, have a look at the CTD guide as well:

It appears you have run out of VAS.  That happens with very long flights.  Do you have the registered version of the FSUIPC.dll?  With the registered version you can monitor the VAS during a flight much like watching FPS.  Here's how it is done:

Fsx acceleration with sp1 and sp2.

This statement always scares me as you cannot have FSX acceleration and SP2 installed at the same time.  FSX Acceleration is the payware version of SP2.  SP2 is the freeware version.  It was released long after Acceleration was released.

After a fresh install of fsx last Sunday that took 10 hrs.

Everything was working well and then I was landing into Dublin and boom CTD again.

Im totally puzzled about why it is doing it.

I tried the fsuipc logging thing but it makes my fsx stutter.

Any tips ? :) Im currently cruising over Portugal en route to Dublin hoping that it wont CTD.

Robert provided the best information earlier in the second post and that was to read and setup your system as per the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide. The AVSIM CTD Guide gives you an explanation for the various reasons for getting a CTD. If also provides excellent information on how to investigate your crash. If you would post a crash report here as requested in the CTD Guide, we might be able to see why your FSX crashes. But you have not done that. When your system is stuttering with FSUIPC installed (the VAS logging would not cause fsx to stutter) you have major, major problems. If you do not want to lower your settings, then your enjoyment of FSX is finished. It really is as simple as that.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have checked event logs and I have made a list of the possible events that may be crashing my fsx.

There is a livecomm.exe which is causing a app hang.

LiveComm.exe       17.5.9600.20413       a78       01cf4c2dbdfa8894       4294967295       C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_17.5.9600.20413_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\LiveComm.exe       0ae3971c-b822-11e3-bf86-d43d7eba3cc7       microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_17.5.9600.20413_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe       ppleae38af2e007f4358a809ac99a64a67c1       55006E006B006E006F0077006E0000000000

9 times out of 10 Livecomm.exe is causing a app hang.

I have followed the CTD guide and gone back to DX9 to see if it improves the CTD problem with fsx.

This is what it looks like in event logs this kernel event also comes up from time to time

Seems like many are getting this error. You may have to reinstall Windows 8.1 - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-performance/critical-report-livecommexe-stopped-responding-and/51d1bcbe-c7d6-46e2-a049-50a45149af1f.

I get those kernel 219 events all of the time but mine were related to my HP printer storage drivers. The only way to solve it for me was to disconnect the USB cable from the printer and plug it in only if I need to print something. There are no drivers for it other than the Windows 7 generic drivers. Then I had another 219 error showing the USB Flash driver problem. Turns out I needed to click on the icon to safely remove hardware and eject media. That fixed it for a couple of days and it started up again so I'm positive my registry is corrupted in that area and won't be fixed unless I reinstall Windows 7. In any case, they are not issues that will stop FSX or your computer from running.

Could it be more config related

It really is hard to say. You are not providing much information. Just a little here, a little there. As you saw in the AVSIM CTD Guide, freezes occur from many, many different sources. High settings, a Bufferpool tweak, high display driver settings, a bad overclock, bad memory frequencies, timings, and/or voltages. A Power Supply Unit that is not capable of running and maintaining power while using FSX (usually below 400 PSU's), and running out of VAS. I have a very powerful system and I almost ran out of VAS just on a flight from San Francisco to Seattle. At the end I was hearing the warning sounds (from FSUIPC) that my VAS was getting low and when I shut FSX down, I had 120MB's of VAS left out of 4GB's. Okay, I have some high settings.... my LOD_Radius is set at 6.5 and my Texture_Max_Load is at 2048. I probably would have had sufficient VAS if I had lowered those settings to 4.5 and 1024 respectively. I had photoscenery, ASN, Shade, ProATC-X, and FTX PNW enabled while flying the PMDG 777. All my other scenery was disabled. With high settings on any computer system, I don't think a flight can survive past 4 hours. This flight lasted only a little more than 2 hours.

In post #3 I gave you details on how to monitor your VAS and erroneously stated you had to have the registered version of the FSUIPC. You do not. This is something you can try. If you have a lot of VAS remaining after the system freezes, then it has to be something else. But, if the VAS is low then your settings are set too high or you have bad tweaks employed like the Bufferpool tweak.

Hope this helps.

I dont have much information to give because event logs is not reporting anything as a event when the CTD happens.

I tried the VAS tip that you had given me on my REGISTERED version of FSUIPC  but it made my fsx stutter so I removed it for the time being.

I have made a new config file and changed values as suggested in the guide but it is still CTD.

Thanks

Try downloading and running AppCrashView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html as recommended in the AVSIM CTD Guide. It provides more information about a crash.
