PMDG 777 extremely slow on overclocked 3930K

Recommended Posts

G'day fellow simmers,

Long story short after nearly two years decided to return to the world of flight sim. Started with overclocking the hell out of my 3930K on water however it will only do 4.4Ghz safely. Used Word Not Allowed's guide to tweak FSX.cfg and other settings.

Everything went smooth and I was very happy with performance purchased REX Direct texture and Essentials plus and Majestic Q400 with all these even in heavy thunderstorm nearly maxed out settings I am getting 20-25 fps so naturally I was over the moon I was finally enjoying my flight sim again. HOWEVER i just remembered that I have purchased PMDG 737NGX so fired it up and my enthusiasm dropped by a large margin suddenly I was getting between 7-12 fps max not enjoyable at all. OK I thought the new 777 must be well optimized so I went ahead and purchased the beast. The aircraft  is the best I've ever experienced but fps is just the same as the 737 if not worse. This low performance generally only occurs with the 737 in the VC, external is snappy and reasonably quick however the 777 is sluggish even on the outside switching to outside view it takes about 10 seconds to draw the aircraft switching back to VC I get black windshields and it takes approx 5-10 seconds to draw the view. Need to also add I use ORBX scenery and very detailed airports.

System:

i7 3930K @ 4.4Ghz on water temperatures are well below 80c

GPU Powercolor R9 280x Turbo factory overclocked. (had to roll back driver to older version due to the Steve's DX 10 fix spiking issue 12.8 I think)

16GB DDR3 1600mhz RAM

True 850 watt PSU

Gigabyte X58-UD3 mobo

SSD dedicated for FSX

my .cfg is below any suggestion is greatly appreciated as I am dying to fly this aircraft.

Your system cannot handle what you are throwing at it. The graphics board is a weakness there. The NGX and 777 are naturally harder on frames than the Majestic Dash.

You're not using the 777 as the default aircraft when FSX loads up are you?

Traffic (all of it; road and ai), texture max load, autogen, all too much. 1024 and autogen 1 is fine for tubes. Airport scenery density; yeah nope 1 is fine not 3. I don't know how the numbers relate to cloud coverage and density, but they're probably too high as well. It looks like you have the graphics section duplicated in bufferpools. That may be causing problems. You also have a duplicate display for your old 7900 video card. Delete the config and start over and let it generate a new one. Be careful adding tweaks.

DX10? Are you using the Fixer?

Try unlimited frames. FSX is weird. I've noticing limiting frames to 30 actually hurts fps.

PMDG aircraft are all about the systems and realism. You can't push eyecandy with them.

What Nvidia card is equivalent to that R9 280x? Mow much VRAM is on the card? I can run the PMDG 737NGX and 777F with solid framerates on my i5 2500k @ 4.3Ghz/8GB DDR3-1600 RAM/1GB GeForce GTX 560Ti powered system, and that's with UT2 airliner AI traffic @ 100%, all sliders at Maximum (apart from water at Mid.2.x), and 8xS AA/2x SGSS/16x AF). The only difference is that I generally fly with clear skies, to minimise the load.

To be honest, OOMs are a far more troublesome problem for me than framerates.

No not the default aircraft. the R9 280x Turbo is weak?? What should I be using? It does not seem to work too hard under fsx load.

See that's why I don't get it. Much lower systems run much faster. Hmm yeah might be worth generating a new .cfg.

Yes using the fixer and the settings in .cfg are from Word Not Allowed's guide so they theoretically should be spot on??

if I could just get up to 14FPS I would be happy I don't think it should be hard with my system.

Hello Bandyair,

pull up a chair and read carefully what I think the problem/s is/are with your setup.

First thing first: ATI is not a good video card for FSX. FSX has an old rendering engine, and ATI made very clear they won't make any changes to their cards design to accommodate it. The card for FSX is Nvidia, I know, bad news, but that is what it is.

Second: the video card you bought has pretty much the same printed circuit board as the Radeon HD 7970, but you pay more, only due to its cooling solution, that is all you pay for. That card is slightly overclocked by roughly 30 Mhz from the stock one, and its DDR3 memories are at stock speed, which is a shame on ATI's part, they could have done mauch better than that, trust me.

Third point: with a 17 3930k you should consider getting a more powerful card. Bear in mind that the CPU and the video card go "hand in hand" with FSX, they both have to be the same quality. You should be looking at a GTX 770 or better GTX 780 from Nvidia, to support the overclock of the CPU, or, as is the case now, your video card will only be a bottleneck for the CPU.

Fourth point: Did you overclock the cpu and then installed and tried all those add ons? By what you are saying, you first overclocked, then installed the NGX, and the 777, to only find out they were kinda sluggish. That is not a good practice at all. First you install FSX with the service packs, then your add ons, and after that you want to overclock.

By looking at your config file, you have activated Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering.

If I read that right, just know that there is no point in doing that,: AA is a resource hog and will only slow down you sim at the expense of performance. Run something like: Trilinear with no AA.

Last, but not least: your config file. Too many believe that by tweaking the config file they'll find the perfect solution to their FSX issues. Trust me, the least you touch your config file, the better, unless you really know what you are doing. There are I believe no more than 3/4 items that are essential, the main one being Highmemfix=1, which Aces forgot to include in the final release of FSX. I see you have the main items needed,. Do not waist your time pasting your config file, and hoping some "guru" will turn it around and give you the performance you want.

Pardon me for sounding harsh, I just want you to understand what might be your problem. I fly the NGX too, and do not have any sluggishness even in heavy add on airports, with weather and everything.

Of course, if I misunderstood or did not read your config file correctly, I am here to be corrected as well....

A quick check revealed comparisons between the R9 280x and the GeForce GTX770, so the former can hardly be considered to be a "weak" graphics card. It should certainly be more powerful than my GTX 560Ti, so something else must be causing problems here. Have you tested the RAM? 16GB is more than enough for FSX, but past experience has taught me that a single faulty stick can play havoc with framerates.

Enrico,

How many people would want to run a flight simulator with no AA? If I tried that, the framerates would certainly increase, but the graphics would look rubbish. I agree with your comment about config tweaks though. The only "tweak" that I use is the AffinityMask one. I tried messing about with BufferPools and RejectThreshold and other stuff in an attempt to sort out a serious "hard stutter" problem that appeared out of nowhere, but in the end the solution was to reinstall FSX and all of my addons. I even considered upgrading my graphics card at one stage (which would have required spending around £200), but the eventual (completely FREE) reinstall solved the problem entirely, and proved that my current GTX 560Ti could handle what I was throwing at it with a fair degree of style

AMD cards do not work all too well with FSX. They do not play ball. Even what would be considered an equal card in modern games is not equal in FSX terms.

R9 280X GAMING 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card, if this is a weak card, than what is powerful one?

I understand that, but would an R9 280x not be able to match a GTX 560Ti? The OP hasn't yet told us how much VRAM it has, but I would bet that it is more than 1GB.

Me....lol...trust me, I have never run FSX on AA, and graphics and all is very good, no sluggishness, I even got rid of pretty much the shimmering, of course through other settings via the Nvidia panel. And I have the NGX set at high resolution. But to each their own, it is your PC, not mine...

Enrico

No! Trust me when I say it, no. And even then, a GTX560 with that CPU, overclocked to 4.4 Ghz would be a huge bottleneck to the CPU, no point in overclocking with that card. Many tend to believe that the GPU is not as important as the CPU, true, up to a point. The two have to be "compatible": both fast or both slow, or you're just wasting your money on a pricey CPU the GPU can't keep after...

Are you saying that my GTX 560Ti is a "bottleneck" for my i5 2500k CPU, even in FSX?

No, they are a good "match", so no worries there...

What fps do you get if you fly from a default airport in the middle of nowhere?

What I'm interested in is to set your fps to unlimited. Go to KEDW (good test airport away from payware scenery) - turn off weather and AI. Load the default Cessna - what are the fps? Load the T7 - what are the fps? Finally load the Q400 - what are the fps? This will tell the performance in comparison to the Cessna. Then I can look on my rig (because I've run all my planes against the default Cessna) and see if your fps drop is normal.

What he said ! Good advice.

Ai and 3D clouds can kill your system.

But first, rebuild a new FSX.cfg file and only add the Mermfix tweak (see Nick's guide).

Set AA using nVidia inspector - set just Trilinear and AA to OFF inside the sim. Sorry - see you are on ATi - ouch... not good for FSX.

Is a pattern emerging here ?
