Our Canadian Brothers - AVSIM Now in the Bushes!

Featured Replies

Sometimes I just have to chuckle with (not at) our Canadian brethren. I thought and hoped that AVSIM was universally available, but now our Canadian bros are taking it a step further. Have a read of this:

Well done Canada!

I can hardly wait for selfies taken in the woods with a lap tap and the AVSIM front page showing clear (sans bears of course)!

Kind of a funny article.

The only thing that's not-so-funny is that our national parks (especially the not-so high profile parks) have kind of been in cutback mode for a few years now; reduced access, reduced facilities, reduced staff, etc.  So to me, the idea of installing park funded wi-fi access points in areas such as the town of Banff (which has decent cell phone coverage and various wi-fi hotspots already) is a waste of park money that could otherwise be better spent on other national park services.

Besides which, one of my main reasons to spend time in a place like Jasper is to get away from day to day life, not stay mired in it.

Just my own opinion though; I'm sure there's many that need to be constantly 'connected'. :P

Ah the serenity....

But honestly I think installing WiFi anywhere these days is a waste of investment, because Smart Phones have a Personal Hotspot option, so people are more likely to use that then to use a WiFi service.

Technology moves forward too quickly to invest in expensive infrastructure. Just ask Nortel Canada Investors about that

Tom,

You'd be surprised of some of the ridiculous locations iv'e brought my laptop. Some of which include a "tent" in -40c in the Canadian arctic, (Which I should say was when we were flying cargo up to Baffin island a couple years back and lets just say we were expecting a hotel room that night). When it gets that cold, you need to find things to take your mind off it.

Thanks for the link!

Canada has one of the world's most impressive cell phone networks - we're the second largest country in the world, we're one tenth of the population of the US, yet there's at least 3G service for 99.5% of Canadians and LTE for 80%...  That's more than the US. :P

True, but also one of the world's most expensive.

Canada is the worlds second largest landmass with 35 million people, so the return on the investment per cell phone tower is low compared to higher density populated countries. This is why Canadians pay more for service.

South Korea for example has 48 million people in a much smaller peninsula, therefore a much more profitable place per cell phone tower so service providers can provide better deals.

In Canada you may have less then 1000 people using a cell phone tower in some regions and in South Korea those numbers would never be that low. If I was a Cell Phone Company I would just stay away from Canada all together.
