Run Out Of Memory

Featured Replies

I previously got a lot of 'FSX has run out of memory, please restart FSX and lower settings' messages and I did some research and decided it may have been my hard drive and so I bought a  250gb SSD. I then reinstalled my OS on the hard drive (SSD is only for FSX) and then all of FSX onto the SSD, I still have 86GB free on it. I usually get this when I am departing or approaching big airports such as UK2000 Heathrow, Aerosoft CDG etc.

I use Orbx Global, Active Sky 2012, REX 4, lots of Payware Airports and usually either PMDG 777 or 737 every flight (but i have lots of others as well).

Basically I am wondering what the problem is. I have read that it can be because of lack of space on your hard drive but as I have an SSD with 86GB free I don't see how it can be this. I am wondering if it is a lack of RAM? I have 8GB of Corsair DDR3-1600MHz.

My specs are:

Windows 7-64bit

Intel i5-3570k overclocked at 4.2GHz

8GB  Corsair DDR3-1600MHz RAM

1000GB Hard Drive (For OS and other programs, only 15% full)

250GB SSD (For FSX Only, 85GB free)

Arctic Freezer CPU Fan

Cooler Master 600w Power Suppley

Help With This would really be helpful! Thank you Very Much in Advance.

Andy

Sorry I left This off:

Since reinstalling everything it seemed okay but yesterday I got the error leaving Heathrow and then I redid the flight from Gatwick and 6 hours later I was approaching Fly Tampa Dubai  and got the error.

Since I Reinstalled everything I have updated every driver possible, Chipstets, GPU etc.

My graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce 760 2GB.

Before I get this error I usually get a beeping sound every so often (maybe 30 seconds between beeps) that sounds like a sort of error sound. I am wondering if this is part of it aswell.

I also want to say that I seem to have eradicated most other CTD's though various Tweeks and programs like FSUIPC.

I am Also testing my RAM at the moment using Memtest86+ but there does not seem to be any errors so far.

HIghly simplifed answer: all your addons are causing FSX to use up all the memory (and then some) that Windows can let it use.  BTW, nothing can fix this problem other than using fewer add ons since it is impossible (trust me, it truely is) to extend the upper limit of memory that Windows can let FSX use. :(

Thank you both very much! I do have some other questions now though.

It mentions photo-sceneries affect this because they all load up, does this mean my orbx global loads up the entire world for an entire flight?

Although more RAM will not sort this problem out, if I buy say 4GB more, will this help to make my Sim run faster/smoother? A noticable difference?

Say I have all my settings sliders for all the scenery things (not including traffic, thats at 60%) if I take them down 20% will that make a noticable difference?

Sorry for all the questions but I fighure when youre in a for like this you may as well try and get as many answers as you can the questions that are bugging you :')

More than 8 GB RAM won't make a change, so you can save your money there.

FTX Global isn't pure photoscenery. It may have a noticeable effect on VAS, but it's probably less than the effect of genuine photoscenery.

Graphics settings DO make a change, but some sliders have a greater effect than others: AI traffic, autogen, Level of detail radius, for example.

What happened to AVSIM

I'm sorry you didn't undestand the link I attached. Perhaps PMDG should do better?

Didn't mean to post that 3 times :')

Oh thank you, That's great! i've already spent enough on this thing!

I will Try moving the sliders and see what happens with my VAS.

That's still 32bit so the OOMs arn't cured. They've just managed to tweak a few things to save a bit on VAS usage. Crank up the settings and you'll get your OOM still.

Flying over photo scenery in general doesn't eat tons of VAS. It's having scenery active in the scenery library that uses VAS. I find flying over (land class) scenery with autogen, in particular autogen vegetation, to build up VAS usage a lot quicker during a flight than flying over clean photo scenery.

SAAB,

Not going to disagree with you totally... My settings are cranked and I have shadows on. I have yet to experience an OOM. I have tested known flights that would cause "me" OOM's and have yet to crash.

I am not running AI or PMDG (which makes me sad). I am running Aerosoft Airbus or the Q400 with excellent frames..... I understand this May be system specific but for "me" it blows FSX out of the water. I could not fly from KSFO to CYVR without almost certain OOM on final or rollout. I have actually completed KSFO CYVR KDEN without a crash. I could never dream of doing that in FSX....

P3D is a fps nightmare for me on my "measly" gtx 570....

I get about 1/4 of the fps compared to FSX.

Anyway, OP - try downloading Process Explorer - and view your vas. Slowly add in more products you'll be able to see which products affect vas more.
