Pop up window announcing out of memory

Featured Replies

During my last flights in FSX I have experienced a ping sound and FSX goes to windowed mode. Then I can see that a window has opened telling me that I have run out of memory. If I press the OK button FSX exits. If I don't I keep hearing this ping sound repeatedly but FSX continues to run. I have encountered CTD before but that has happened without any warnings. Also those CTD has been rather rare. Now it happens fairly soon so I find it strange that memory should already be low. Last time I flew the PMDG 737NGX from KPDX to KSEA and this alert come up after only about 15 minutes. It's this pop up window that confuses me. Can't remember seeing it before and FSX continues to run despite the message.

Respectfully, it pays to search the AVSIM forums or even Google will lead you to similar posts.  Use any search engine and try "FSX Out of Memory". You should find that it's well documented and a limitation of a 32-bit operating system which limits the usable memory to roughly 3.5GB regardless of how much memory you have.

It's not that folks mind helping someone new to the Hobby, not at all.  But the amount of people who never think to search the Internet for information is off the charts. They must be teaching it is schools. Syllabus must be something akin to "A whole wide world of the Internet with unlimited answers waiting just waiting out there for you, so ignore it and write another post instead.

Shoot, it's so widespread that some ingenious person developed "Let me Google That For You" as a passive-aggressive way to insult and educate people about the power of a simple Internet search.

The problem is... eventually an Internet search will only come up with new posts asking the same questions and getting replies like this.

The "pinging" you are hearing is FSUIPC warning you that your have nearly exhausted the Virtual Address Space pool...

...If you pause your sim and lower one or more sliders just a bit, then reload the scene you can probably recover enough free VAS to continue your flight.

To add to that, pause the sim and save your flight also if you have alot of time invested in it.
