July 21, 201411 yr I've got to say that I have been flying in FS for many years and never been worried, however the PMDG 777 has made me a more nervous flyer then ever. It's not the systems or the size, it's the VAS issue. I know that it is not the only add-on my system that is a memory hog and I'm not blaming PMDG or the 777 as it is just the way simming is going, To have top quality add-ons then you have to sacrifice things. It's the biggest, most complex aircraft I have, only it's the only one that I have to worry about. I have think I have the VAS problem under control but I still seem to fly with one ear open for the dreaded bing, I worry that I might taxi too close to some large texture that takes me over the limit, that some AI comes and crashes my system. I line up on approach and worry about landing, not that I might crash or have to go around, that my system my spit out that lovely message "you're dated flight simulator has giving up showing you a quality depiction of the airport and a quality aircraft, please go back to Microsoft's default versions" I knew the size of the PMDG 777 before I bought it, more so with the 300 version. PMDG has made a masterful reproduction of the aircraft, unfortunately it is held back the platform it is on. A bit like having a Ferrari and trying to drive it through my local town center, I want to let it stretch it's legs and enjoy it to it's full capacity.
July 21, 201411 yr Think I'm the same, luckily I reached my destination before the dreaded "ping" of OOM and quickly submitted my PIREP, and for once in my life, I don't know how to fix this OOM issue, tried almost every thing. Ah well may have to save the fight then shut FSX, then load flight again. Only viable solution ATM. July 21, 201411 yr Even though I have VAS issues only very rarely due to very moderate settings, I save my longhaul flights about every half an hour. That reduces my nervousness related to VAS problems significantly I think PMDG did a very good job reducing the VAS load as much as possible. There are a lot planes with less simulation detail, that seem to consume a lot more VAS an have a lot more issues. best regards, Mathias
July 21, 201411 yr you know within the last month, I have gotten into a habit of saving my flight several times during the flight. You can say that I add it to a sequence of checklist or so. I have yet to encounter any worrying messages. I am not sure what it is, but I think that saving your flight makes the app more stable. Best Regards Adib Afraj
July 21, 201411 yr maybe i'm just lucky but the VAS usage seems pretty reasonable on my system, i never even get close to the limit. i'm flying over orbx PNW right now, out of flightbeam KSFO (both pretty heavy on VAS) and still have 900meg free. cheers, -andy crosby
July 21, 201411 yr AffinityMask=14 Having this setting saved me alot of VAS on my setup. Do a before and after with a VAS monitor running and see how it works for you. Dave Creed
July 25, 201411 yr I've always had AffinityMask set to 14 but thanks anyway. It's not that I can't manage the VAS, infact I have helped a lot of people on AVSIM with VAS. It's just, when you add the PMDG 777 to an already loaded system, you can be tempted to push the limits a little bit much, but that is what you have to cope with when you go for quality, high system and everything else on an ageing platform.
July 25, 201411 yr I never had an OOM since getting rid of certain things, Number 1 I use FSUIPC to turn my AI off after departure (Its nice to populate an airport other then that its so annoying) (2)No car traffic boat traffic or airport vehicles (3) I use a LOD of 4.5 (4) I use 1024 textures, can;t really notice a game changing quality of HD textures anyways. (5) I use dx10. All my sliders are pretty much to the right or one peg down, I fly in heavy areas like fsdt cyvr with orbx and never get the oom anymore. Sorry to say this guys but your going to have to trim up some fat on certain things, its just how it is.
July 25, 201411 yr 1 I use FSUIPC to turn my AI off after departure Hi Ian, How can I turn off AI within FSUIPC ater I take off? I am using Ultimate Traffic from F1 Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
July 25, 201411 yr Manny if your using ut2 you don't need fusipc to do it. Ut2 has the option built into it. I think it's cntrl shift t or something like that.
