Looking to upgrade my system for FSX, will this system work?

I suggest you read the post by user TheNerd just a few days ago on adjacent thread in this forum, very down-to earth, an interesting perspective on this business of squeezing every single fps.

A good read Michael.  Thanks.

Why go with a less powerful CPU?

This is why I ask you and the other experts here, because I am still very wet around the ears in the way of specific PC hardware details .  Well, if I do not intend to overclock, why would I need the K then?

Insist on the 4770K! .. or a 4790K.

I did some research on the 4790K tonight, stock is 4.0 Ghz, so that gets me into the zone a little more.  Will check to see if they have that or can order it.

The 4770K and 4790K are basically the same CPU, but the 4790K is factory overclocked.

Either one will run happily at 4.0 Ghz without extra voltage or cooling.. well worth insisting on one or the other, whichever one your supplier can get.

Well, I'm a little bummed, not just a little really.   :(   Found out this weekend that my favorite AI aircraft (Aardvark) that I have used in FS9 and will use in FSX has lightmap issues with FSX - the nighttime tail logos are nearly non existent for one.  The fix is extensive, as PhotoShop is required and I don't have that.  I have all retro paints and models for my AI. So if you were to have seen my FS9 setup, it would look like 1974 as far as AI is concerned.

Since I sim at night settings for the most part, this lightmap issue is a real bummer.  My realistic AI in FSX will not be as realistic as it is in FS9.

So I am contemplating on just getting a ASUS Z78 mobo and a 750W PSU and have it installed for the ability to upgrade from the stock 3770K to a 4770K and a GTX 770 a couple of years from now.   Perhaps by then some updates to AIA might will be worked out regarding the lightmap tail logo issue.  With some of the upgrade money saved, I can then add on mesh and other secnery add-ons to make FS9 look more realistic in ground texture.  Like getting UT and GEX (for FS9).  I have heard mixed issues with FSGenesis, and ORBIX FS Global landclass appears too green and dark compared to UT and GEX.  reading more threads on the other forum sections and YouTube vids will need to be reviewed to determine that for me.

Anyways.....

What do you guys think on the mobo pick?

Will I have any potential "bottlenecks" with the stock 3770K (3.9 Ghz "Turbo Boost")  with the stock GTX 660 (non-overlocked) and the ASUS Z87 mobo?  I might see how much more a GTX 680 will be as Nick's "bible" said the 680 will work best with the 3770K.

Hello folks.   I am back after having to remove myself from my inquests here due to a sudden death in my immediate family shortly after my last post in August.   Getting back to Flight Simming will help a little with my loss.

I am having a new machine built with much higher specs than what was in my first post here:

CPU:      Intel i7-4790K 4.0 Ghz  8M Cache

MOBO:  ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2

GPU:      Nvidia GTX 970 4GB

RAM:     8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport

PSU:      EVGA 750W 80 Plus Gold

SSD:      Crucial 500GB BX100

HD:        2TB Western Digital

OS:        Win 7 Pro

Any and all comments would be appreciated as were before, as construction of the machine is in progress.

I will be installing FS9 first on the SSD and will get that up and running like it was before in my old machine, then I will install FSX.  Placing both in separate folders away from the Program Files on the SSD, as others have suggested.  I won't be overclocking on this.

Thank you,

Jeff
