August 24, 201411 yr Still learning the MJC's Dash 8 Q400, but enjoyed this short hop from KTVL to KLMT. Added some real world ATC from appropriate enroute contacts - which in itself is an interesting listen. Weather was typical for CA ... very minor turbulence with some scattered clouds and light winds. But sadly once again, it was a hard landing .... too low and slow again ... more practice needed ... if you want to skip to the landing, approach starts around the 9 min mark. Love this aircraft because it's such a challenge to fly ... I'll get there eventually. And of course the Orbx scenery is outstanding ... heck even KLMT had some very nice details. Cheers, Rob. P.S. No stutters in my original footage ... so blame YouTube or your ISP or your Browser if you see some. 1.8GB original recording so not going to upload to my Google drive this time, sorry.
August 24, 201411 yr Cool beans, Rob. Downloading from youtube now to stream on my tv. A 23" monitor doesn't do P3D any justice. Cheers, Jazz
August 24, 201411 yr Not too bad a landing, Rob. You were in a full on stall with less than 100' above ground, stick shaker going bananas, not too bad at all. And everyone walked away. Cheers, Jazz.
August 24, 201411 yr Rob, the Airline2Sim videos are rather useful, and I haven't even flown the thing yet. I understand quite a bit about it. They also teach you things that are not simulated since the instructor on the vid is a Q400 pilot. I said this before in another post, but you may have missed it. One thing I learned on that video, is that if you fly with no cargo, and just the fuel needed the plane will perform badly and be hard to control. Loading additional fuel or cargo stabilizes it. August 24, 201411 yr Ah Rob, The Guru of P3d...very nice...what is the secret I am just about to pull the refund trigger....had nothing but issues. Have not installed anything but P3D to a clean SSD run a i72600 @4.5 and GTX 770 4gb...but every seven seconds the scenery micro stutters and stutters on banking of any degree. Tried all know setting turning things on off to no avail...no AG is even on as I do not like it never have. No anti virus or MS scans taking place....anything you can offer before it is back to FSX .. trouble is you can not even use a Nvidia profile it does not work Great Video All the best
August 24, 201411 yr As the friendly voice in the video suggests, you might want to set some flaps next time . Then 130kts will not be too slow.
August 24, 201411 yr Flaps, can you post video of what you are getting? Settings, etc. As much info as you can. If you have done this, link it for me. I don't think you posted a video though. I'd like to see what kind of microstutters or otherwise you are getting. Also are you OC'ing your card? What is the base of the 2600? (is it the same as the 2600k?) I can get 4.9 ghz on my 2600 OC with ASUS AI, but instead I chose to OC the standard setting. I'm installing P3D with OC off. I've heard it causes issues as you are installing software. I may leave it off and see what framerates I get. Make sure to use P3D supported addons, no migration if you can help it. I dont' think you want to pull the trigger. But if you really want to, there's nothing stopping you buying it again later once it matures even more (they have a schedule of planned updates I believe, I think it's 4 a year?) and there is still a major shift that could occur with XPX and now maybe, but maybe not Outerra (kind of fuzzy on that whole thing) Nathan Allen Pinard Virtual Pilot in Training Composer/Sound Designer www.nathanallenpinard.com
August 24, 201411 yr , you might want to set some flaps next time I did? 15 degrees ... more? What am I doing up at 3:41 am ... local earthquake (6.1 in Vallejo) actually woke me up ... they usually don't wake me but this was an extended bed shake (and no it wasn't my wife). Ok back to bed, pets have been re-assured. Graphics settings used are here: http://www.robainscough.com/P3D_V2.php Not using NI nor any SLI settings. Cheers, Rob.
August 24, 201411 yr MJC's Dash 8 Q400, but enjoyed this short hop from KTVL to KLMT. Superb video Rob! Did you do anything special as far as the Q400 stutters in P3D or did it just run perfectly upon installation? Mario Di Lauro
August 24, 201411 yr Did you do anything special as far as the Q400 stutters in P3D or did it just run perfectly upon installation? I actually did nothing to the Q400 ... all default after 1.011 update. I would like to change/map the steering tiller ... seems a tad too sensitive and can be a little tricky when it transitions at speed (both take-off and landing) ... so I'll visit the MJC Q400 control panel and make some adjustments. I even tried "unlimited" frames in this flight (which is not recommend for this AC) and it seems to work fine, no jitters. Still the bridge/pylon issue (tall bridges) but seems less obvious now. Cheers, Rob.
August 24, 201411 yr I did? 15 degrees ... more?Yes, the reason it's yelling 'Flaps' at you on approach is (usually) because you don't have a 'normal' landing flaps setting selected. Or at least not the flaps setting the GPWS is configured for. I think in the Q400 you can actually 'tell' the GPWS that you are using flaps 15 for landing with a switch somewhere, and it will shut up then. But it's been a while since I've flown the MJC Q400.
August 24, 201411 yr Rob, the Airline2Sim videos are rather useful Purchased and downloading 10 of 10 videos now. Cheers, Rob. I think in the Q400 you can actually 'tell' the GPWS that you are using flaps 15 for landing with a switch somewhere, and it will shut up then. Yes I did that, was set to 15 flaps ... the warning seems to be related to my speed being too low in relation to my flaps settings, not the actual flap setting themselves. Just started watching the Airline2Sim videos and real world pilot mentions the how different the aircraft flies with various flap settings ... so I have much to learn. Now that this aircraft is working reasonably well in P3D v2.x with only a few minor issues, I'm going to be spending more time with it ... and now I have more free time to actually fly and not have to test. Cheers, Rob.
August 24, 201411 yr Other good resources for the Q400 are; the 'Detailed tutorial flight', an in-depth look into the operation of the Q400, and, the article 'Landing the Q400', which gives many helpful hints, tips, and tricks, to help you setup for your approach and smooth out those landings. Both articles were written by real world Q400 Captains, and may be found on Majestic's website, in the resources section. http://majesticsoftware.com/mjc8q400/downloads.html Cheers, Jazz.
August 25, 201411 yr First I want to say awesome video and your sim looks great! Ok, I've taken an accident investigators approach (which is what would happen IRL after a landing like that ) and recreated the flight in a simulator. It all starts on the pre flight. You turned on the INCR REF SPEED and left it on the entire flight. This increases your Vspeeds by 20kts and is the reason you get the stick shaker after take off and on final. That switch should only be on if you are flying through icing conditions. I also suspect the airplane was very close, if not over, max landing weight. If you left it default you most likely were and the center of mass was out of limits as well. This would make the airplane a chore to handle in any condition. You should use the control panel to load the Q400 not P3D. Also, as stated above, the GPWS flap selector was set correctly but you didn't actually set flaps 15 until about 50ft AGL. That is why you got "TO LOW, FLAPS" when you pulled the throttle back. That wail you heard right before touch down was you pulling the throttle into the ground range in flight. Don't chop the throttle like most planes on landing. The tiny Q400 wings need wind from the props to maintain lift and this is simulated quite well. You should be fully configured for landing and stable at 1000 on the RAD ALT. Try flying the approach at flaps 15 and 135-140kts. If you're light, you can lower the speed but I tend to stay above 120. Set torque to maintain a slight nose down or flat attitude, usually 14-18, and a standard decent rate. At 40 AGL start lifting the nose, no more than 5 degrees, and let the plane settle on the runway. Don't touch the throttle until the nose is on the ground! Kind of long winded but hope I can help.
August 25, 201411 yr Ok, I've taken an accident investigators approach (which is what would happen IRL after a landing like that ) and recreated the flight in a simulator. I don't know about crash investigations .. I don't think the Dash 8 is that fragile. Real World: Mine from that flight: Thank you for the information and I appreciate the input ... I've got the training videos downloaded now and will dig into them and heck I may even read documentation. I've added your info to my Dash 8 "quick notes" file (I keep notes like this just about all aircraft) ... much appreciated. Cheers, Rob.
