Frame rate drop with 3 monitors

Featured Replies

I finally added 2  LG 21.5 monitors,to my system IntelDX58SO win 7 64 bit,Nvidia Gforce GTX 660, 22" Samsung Monitor,Processor IntelR Corei7 CPU 920 @2.67 GHz ,Hardware is CH Yoke.Throttle Quad & peddles FSX is on its own partitioned harddrive,I also use Active Sky,FSUIPC4

All worked well before adding the two monitors, now its jerky frames set to 25 getting 6.5 - 10 worse in busy airports, almost unflyable?

My IT friend (bit of a computer moron myself) is suggesting processor, motherboard memory upgrade, which I am quite prepared to do ? about $500,or go back to single monitor flying?

Do find it a bit of a pain setting up views in new view virtual windows each time, I fly in 2D,usually in house 737,occasionaly A380  love to fly NDB,VOR ILS approaches which I might use one of the monitors for? ,havnt looked yet,but are there any apps that would do that for me,remember my settings when using FSX

    Any advice gratefully received

I do not think your hardware is not quite up to the task for a triple setup.   I have an i7 3930k OC to 4.3ghz with a GTX 770, 32 gigs of RAM and run 3 24" ASUS monitors and even I see a bit of a hit at busy airports.   Three monitors can eat your lunch real quick if you don't have the hardware to support it.    You want a video card that can haul on a triple setup which I am am saving up for now.  Going for a Titan Black 6gig Video card which is a cool grand *cough*.  Of course I need it for more than just simulation.  I do a lot of photography work.   That is not a cheap buy but I think it will help me out even more than what I have now.    Do your research!  See what video card pairs well with CPUs and look at the all powerful benchmark ratings for Triple monitors.

You need at least a 2 or 3GB card to push that much resolution. Autogen is a killer on 3 monitor setups and it will overload your CPU way before you max out your graphics, you will need to probably use "normal" for both autogen settings.

Running monitors with separate VC views is probably the easiest way to reduce your fame rates. You will get better results running the the three screens in Surround mode.

Also that 920 should overclock pretty easily.

With a decent CPU cooler you should get it up to at least 3.3 GHz and pick up about 5 or 6 extra FPS.

Hmm, strange. I have similar problems when i fly the 777 over Manhattan X  with all sliders to the right and at 16 x speed with my 4 mb video card from 1996.  Sorry couldn't resist.

Thanks everyone, for all your advice, gonna make a trip to Canada Computer, get up graded, but will take my IT friend, flying the 172 was never this complicated lol

Hi Bob,

I sourced all of my components from Canada Computers, I originally had a GTX 660TI which wasn't a bad card but once I got my O/C up to 4.7 ghz I quickly realised the card couldn't handle what the processor was throwing at it. This was with an Asus 27 inch LED. I also wanted a 3 screen system so I ended up selling that card on Kijiji and getting an Asus GTX780 (3GB) What a difference !!

What I did recently do is try a LG 42 inch 1080P TV that wasn't being used in our new house and I have to say I am quite liking it so I think I am going to stick with this rather than go with 3 sreens. FSX has never looked so good.

If you need any help or advice on upgrades PM me, I am in the Toronto area and will be happy to help. You can have a look at my PC specs in my profile. I built this specifically for FSX. It does nothing else.

I have Activesky next, PFPX & EFB all running on my networked iMac running windows on bootcamp

Hi Richard

Thanks for the reply, thats just what I got installed today the GTX 780, & 3 -4gb mem cards ,was just trying it out,bit dissapointed, tho I think the card is fantastic, still playing with it?,turned all the sliders down, makes it flyable ,but still only running 10-16 fps & jerky with some freezing, does this mean the processor isnt good enough for the 780 card ?

Can Comp were very helpfull, even installed it for me for free & suggested I try the card before changing the processor Did the system performance thing, procesor still lowest score 5.5,will take print out, to them tomorrow, see what they think?

will be taking you up on help & advice,am a bit of a computor moron myself, & appreciate the offer,I am in Kitchener & will play with it some more yet, just using virtual side views, will let you know how it goes ?

   Thanks again for your reply

Hi Bob,

You now have a great card but you are correct in your assumption in that you really need to beef up the CPU, the two really go hand in hand together. Unfortunately FSX is an old piece of software and is very processor bound. If I push all the sliders too far I can bring even my system to it's knees. It is all about balance and sensible tweaking. A big step was getting DX10 working well with the help of Steve's DX10 fixer. Unfortunately he has withdrawn this awesome piece of software so it can still be achieved but now needs to be done via forums such as AVsim using various pieces of software instead of one package.

I have been playing with the demo version of X-Plane 10. I didn't like it at first but I am warming to it, especially as it looks like in the not too distant future we will see PMDG products on that platform. X-Plane 10 will take full advantage of all the hardware you can throw at it.

For now I am very happy with the setup I have and the immersion level I get from the 42 inch TV and add ons such as Activesky next & FTX Global. I now find I spend way more time flying rather than tweaking which is what should be happening.

The one thing I would say about upgrading is think about the components you want and do not cheap out. It is better to do it right first time. I find the Asus products to be exceptional and you will see that the core components of my system are all Asus but that is of course just my opinion.

Hope this helps and I hope you get back to some quality flying real soon,

Richard

Hi Richard

Can Comp suggested upgrading the processor to a 4790 ? & new mb 297? arround $500+? ,which I guess is my next step ?

before I do that I was thinking to try  surround view, which I liked the looks of over the virtual views on the other two monitors, supposed to be easier on fps than virtual views, not sure if my system can do it but gonna try setting it up though the Nvidia control panel?? Have FSUIPC4 & widefs  ,not sure about how yet?

I also have Active Sky to(not next yet) & Ultimate Terrain US & Canada only payware aircraft I have is the A380 ,using the MS 0nboard b737 my usual chariot  I

can get flying if I drop the weather, (not good for an IFR man) but still poor fps & ctds which I never had with the 660 card & 1 Samsung 22" lol your rite, I would rather be flying

Thanks again & what do you think of the propsed upgrade?

 Bob G

You can try to over clock first.  I have my 920 running at 4.0 Ghz solidly.  I did put a water cooler on it though, not sure how high you can get on air.

thanks, thought about that, but dont think I"m comp savvy enough to do that ???,afraid of bios? & dont want to cheap out, if I really need that processor?, did get surround view running ?,but cockpit was a stretched out mess,& even the nvidia control screen kept locking up,even finished up with only the cocpit view window open in flight? gonna have get someone who knows what the heck their doing,?
