  1. I'm guessing you need different mesh. Fortunately they have freeware Holgermesh for PNG on their site. https://fullterrain.com/freeware
  2. From the IGN Review: http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/04/07/htc-vive-review Also check this video out: (Note at about 2:50 he brings up the actual camera view, which currently follows the controller.) I think this just shows what could possibly be implemented if you have an existing cockpit that you want to use with this. I don't think using the camera would be that great to hit a switch in a full 737 cockpit, but a smaller Saitek based cockpit could easily work.
  3. 1. While that may be true for the general population, what do you think it is for us flight simmers. Most of us have really beefy machines. 10%, 25%, 50%? Whatever it is for this audience, it's definitely higher than 1%. 2. It really does not compare to looking at a 4K monitor... it is so much lower res, and "pixelated". I haven't tried a production unit, just DK2, but it does sound like it's improved. And this is something that will continue to improve over time. But yeah you won't have nearly the quality/sharpness today in VR as a regular monitor. 3. This definitely varies person to person, and application to application. Some have people have no problems at all. I've done hours in a DK2 with P3D and had no problems. I've also done some VR roller coasters and gotten queasy. The application and how the motion goes definitely affects the experience. Also agree they will be niche, but so is PC gaming at this point. The big thing that won me over was the immediate feel like it was a real plane. I spawned in just using the default Extra in P3D and looking down the nose it just looked and felt real. Even though the resolution was not as high as monitors, let alone real life. I have never felt that same immersion in my generic home cockpit. Tried with 3 monitors, tried with a large screen projected in front of me... neither compared to visually immerse me as VR. I've been going back and forth between getting Vive or Oculus (as I'll only be able to do one and also want to upgrade to a Pascal card later this year). After looking at a whole bunch of reviews I like everything about the Vive more, especially the possibility of being able to use the front camera to see my physical cockpit controls, but am actually leaning towards the Rift due to the comfort of the head strap. If I can't wear it for 2-3 hours straight I don't think it's the right one for me. Apparently my local Microsoft store has Vive demos going on so I may stop by to try it on and see how comfortable it is.
  4. I personally am torn... I have a very simple cockpit built using mostly Saitek gear, and having the feel of hitting switches is big. Then again I borrowed a coworkers DK2 last weekend and did some flying with it, and in many ways it feels so much more realistic than just a screen in front of you. I did not try it using the full version of FlyInside with a Leap Motion, perhaps that will be the piece that helps it be more real. I'll be excited to try it with a Vive... perhaps I could combine both using the Vive's camera to show my physical cockpit for hitting switches.
  5. I pre-ordered one of these, which I'm super excited about: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/10/950-pro-review-samsungs-first-pcie-m-2-nvme-ssd-is-an-absolute-monster/ Amazon says I should have it on Monday. 350,000 read IOPS, 140,000 write IOPS... This thing should scream! I will however be making it my boot disk and keep P3D & FSX on my 840 Pro. Any move to a SSD is huge. Even the low end ones do about 80,000 read 50,000 write IOPS, versus a spinning 7200 RPM drive is like an average of 80 IOPS. (There are of course many other factors that influence drive speed, such as transfer rates, sequential vs random, and even what humans are able to perceive.)
  6. I've done the exact same... Started adding a few freeware aircraft via that method to test it out. The worst part was the ones with dependencies on FSX models (like the An225 using panels from the default 747), but with the error log when you close P3D3 it helps you figure out what you need.
  7. Sounds like the Windows Out of Memory error... Only times I've seen that is with folks running a 32 bit version of Windows and too many other apps taking a piece. But I could be wrong with how I read the error message...
  8. One thing I've done in the past was use jigsaw blades and drill bits designed for plastic. They worked well for the project I was doing. I got them from Delvie's Plastics, which has a bunch of plastic options, but I only bought there as they are local to me. I've done some looking into using ABS for some custom panels, but for the reason that I was just more worried about cracking the acrylic over ABS for an instrument panel. Both ABS and Acrylic could be black on white and then engraved to add labels (like here for ABS). There is also 2 tone acrylic available out there. Here's one place I found that can cut it, and has the 2 tone acrylic, (there are of course many others...) but that page also has good info on several types of plastics. When I do something next I'll probably go for the black on neutral (so it can be backlit) ABS, and have it all laser cut so I don't have to do anything additional. It just takes additional planning. Thickness will come down to cost, but I'd like 1/4" if possible, down to 1/8" minimum as there is still lots of flex there. Hopefully some of that info helps. There is ton's of stuff out there.
  9. hehe... I can see my office in your last shot. Nice set!
  10. Pete Dowson hasn't listed any upcoming holidays that I see... so no 2.5 release yet. Once he announces a long one I'm sure we'll see it.
  11. So now that https://microsoftflight.com/ is shutdown is there a way to reinstall the base game?
  12. Hopefully they don't do the same 16 player limit though. That part did suck. I ran into that limit often before Alaska was released.
  13. Aww... Just realized I picked up some aerocaches last night, but didn't run the toolkit to update it... Guess I'll have to do them again with the new toolkit.
  14. Glad it worked for you guys! And thanks again KavindaJD for finding the fix and posting it here! I was able to do a last group flight with my community tonight. We originally formed from Microsoft Flight and the simple way to join multiplayer with friends. Although over the last 1-2 years since development ended we've moved more to FSX, P3D, and DCS... we still remembered our roots and the sim that brought us together. As the multiplayer shuts down tomorrow I'll remember it with a fond heart. (And keep hoping Stonelance is able to get a new MP working )
  15. Check the C:\Miniweb directory. You should have a folder: htdocs and a single file: miniweb.exe. You could try going to (for Windows 7) Start->All Programs->Accessories and right click on that one to do run as admin. Lots of times I'll just type it in, and wait for the search box to bring up the result for cmd.exe. After you get it to run make sure it is running by going to http://127.0.0.1/ and http://127.0.0.1/config.xml Edit: Also I don't think the deletes are 100% necessary. They clean it up for sure, but aren't required. I walked a friend through the patches and we skipped all that completely.
