October 2, 201411 yr Jeff great work in discovering ORBX vector being a VAS hog. I was getting close to pulling the trigger myself but I think I will now stay with what I have (gex utx). Excellent thread! ZORAN
October 2, 201411 yr So, the general concensus is that GEX and UTX use far less VAS than orbx? Maybe I'll look into that.

No, UTX uses a lot of VAS if everything it offers is used, but it is highly configurable and that allows you to reduce VAS used a lot. GEX is supposed to improve FSX performance actually. Rob Robson
October 5, 201411 yr Author No, UTX uses a lot of VAS if everything it offers is used, but it is highly configurable and that allows you to reduce VAS used a lot. GEX is supposed to improve FSX performance actually. Yeah, you have to turn stuff off with it. My newest panacea for this VAS illness: Steve's DX10 Fixer. Things are going much better now that I'm using that. Jeff Bea I am an avid globetrotter with my trusty Lufthansa B777F, Polar Air Cargo B744F, and Atlas Air B748F.
October 5, 201411 yr Another thing to save VAS. I was told once to delete my fsx.cfg, then when whenever I reload the sim and it asks me what modules I want loaded [Would you like to load PMDG Module?] click 'YES' only to what I'm going to use for that flight, then click "NO" to save my decision. Everything you click no on won't be loaded into VAS at all, for instance, sceneries and aircraft modules you won't use for that flight. I'm not sure if this is rumor or not, but in my experience with FSX I was getting OOM errors with the NGX before I tried this, and I don't get them in the NGX or 777 anymore. Though I've also limited the amount of products I install at all. (I've got about 3 payware aircraft now, as opposed to 10 before). Everything seems to help. Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory. The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire. To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune. There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you. It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.
October 10, 201411 yr Author Since I am the OP, I thought I'd check in and share my solution: Steve's DX10 fixer. Plain, simple, definitively. Nothing but confidence now. AND, I am able to leave all sceneries checked without issue. Hope that helps. Thanks for all the input and discussion, I appreciate it. Happy flying! Amendment: I'll probably have to turn sceneries on and off still. WIII (BDO payware) to OTHH (Taxi2Gate payware) and I have 600MB left as I began descent into OTHH. I suspect FlyTampa Dubai sucked the life out of VAS by flying near it. So, I save, I select my LH Cargo B777F, reload (still get the visual model anomalies I have described in another post), reload the plane, and coast on down with 2Gig of VAS available! I end up with 1.3 Gig of VAS available as I touch down at OTHH. So, "FIX" is still DX10 and Steve's DX10 fixer, but most of the advice from PMDG in the pages I refer to in my signature still apply. So, DX10 Fixer is not quite a silver bullet, but I get WAY more VAS overhead/legroom than with DX9.
