April 29, 200521 yr I know that this topic has been discussed so much here. But I have a question. Some of my addon airports are fine, some are shimmering. But it's not that much. Recently I purchased FlyTampa San Fransisco (which is great btw), shimmering is just terrible there.. when I'm landing the airport looks terrible:( I tried everythig; AA, AF, mipmap, other settings.. still the same thing. Is there any thing I can do to make it look better? My Specs:AMD Athlon 64 3400+, ATI Radeon 9800XT1024Mb PC3200 DDR400gb HDAudigy 2 ZSRes: 1600*1200, 32.Thanks for any help.
April 30, 200521 yr With that system it's quite a shame you are getting shimmering! Do you have the latest drivers for the video card? Are you running the official or the Omega drivers? Personally I found the Omega's had more shimmering but that could just be me.Also have you tweaked your FS9.cfg file at all?
April 30, 200521 yr Author I'm using latest ATI official drivers. I tried Omega but I didn't see any improvements. I did some fs9.cfg tweaking but not too much. What should I change there?ThanksEdit: I'm using 20.1" LCD, Viewsonic VP201b. 1600*1200 native res.
April 30, 200521 yr By shimmering, do you mean the ground flashes, but the sky is unaffected? I've had this problem. I finally fixed it by putting the Target Frame Rate slider to UNLIMITED. Just happened to do it one day. The shimmering was bad enough to delay my simming for a week. I hope this fixes your problem.
April 30, 200521 yr Author Jaap,Currently mipmap is set to 4.Ozark,Yes, sky is fine. Actually ground is mostly OK, maybe some little shimmering, but some of the airports are really looking terrible with this shimmering. I tried putting the target frame rate to unlimited, still the same thing. Thanks
April 30, 200521 yr what is your TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL set to?try setting it 19, or 20, or 21 and see if any of those fixes it....
April 30, 200521 yr Hi Jack, I could confirm shimmering trees but airport buildings don't shimmer on my end. I did try 1600x and 6xAA once with my 9800pro and had to reduce the AA back to 4x because the shimmer increased (I found this awkward but there must be a logical explination). I'm using a 19" CRT and normally use 1280x @6xAA/4xAF. Have you tried no or 2xAA? Good luck and kind regards Jaap
May 1, 200521 yr Author I tried 19, 20, 21 terrain vertex in fs9.cfg. I also tried different AA and AF configs, and no AA. So far nothing works:-( It's a shame because FlyTampa KSFO is such a great scenery, and I cant really fly there coz it looks terrible...
May 1, 200521 yr Have you tried the support forum at FlyTampa Jack?I ask because I saw a post there recently with a texture patch for SFO, not sure if it addresses your problem but worth a look.
May 2, 200521 yr Author Yes, I tried the texture patch. Didn't help.I posted a message about that simmering on FlyTampa forum, maybe they will know how to fix it.Thanks for all replies.
May 2, 200521 yr Hello Jack:This really applies to runway flashing and the like, but if something along that order is included in what you are seeing the problem may not even really have anything to do with KSFO Fly Tampa directly. Some other program may be the culprit.I have all of the Fly Tampa and almost all of the SimFlyer locations. I have discovered that when I arrive at any of them as a destination I get flashing if my departure point was in the Manhattan area (i.e. KJFK, KEWR, etc.) AND Manhattan Scenery was enabled. With Manhattan scenery disabled - No Problem at all and the flashing goes away. This doesn't happen at any of the default airports (or at least at any I have observed). For what it is worth!Happy flyingRTH
May 2, 200521 yr Author I have the same problem with Manhattan scenery. When you're flying from Manhattan area to Simflyers, FlyTampa, etc. the ground is flashing at destination, right? I tried to fix it for a long time now but no luck so far. So currently when I'm flying from Manhattan area I have to disable Manhattan scenery. If someday you will find a solution for that, let me know:-) But the problem with shimmering is something different, the lines are shimmering like crazy at KSFO and some other airports. It doesn't matter if Manhattan is enabled or disabled. I think that something must be wrong with my pc config or with FS config.Best Regards,
May 2, 200521 yr I think it's a combination of two things; the way the airport scenery is designed and your hardware. In most of the scenery I use, the ground objects like taxiway lines shimmer slightly which I consider normal, but in some, such as LIPZ from Italy Scenery Design the shimmering is unbearable. The scenery quality and detail in itself is amazing but I have not found a way around the shimmering problem. To be precise, the shimmering is present only in ground textures or any thin lines, such as airport perimeter fences.
May 2, 200521 yr I get shimmering with aircraft paints, some default scenery textures such as buildings and airports, add-on textuers, etc. My hardware sure isn't to blame and I setup my flight sim using the guides but still no luck. Maybe it is the cat 2.5 drivers I have installed? I run 1600x1200 and 4x AA seems to help but it still isn't as smooth as I'd like. Hopefully new drivers will come out and this will be fixed.
