PMDG 777 ILS Audio

Featured Replies

I have just bought the PMDG 777 and it is a fantastic plane, I also have the 777 300 package and both are fully updated. Does anyone know how you get the ILS morse code on audio? The FMC chooses the correct frequency and the ILS works ok, I just would like to be able to hear the morse code for reassurance. Any help out there please?

Look in FCOMv2 pg 5.10.1; see the knob in lower center of Audio Control Panel labled V B R?  Read the manual to see how this knob functions and allows you to hear the code tones.

Also, full names are requested in the PMDG forum. Thanks.

I have tried what you said and I get two different frequencies of the morse code. Is there any youtube videos of this process??

It would be easier to assist you if you provided a little more information such as which ILS gives you two tones, multiple locations or just one? I've never heard multiple but I've never flown (real world) outside US. Normally, it is a single tone dot/dash that is inhibited by a high pass filter inside the receiver to allow voice without tone.

Ok I will try and explain in more detail.

I know how to set the ILS frequency in the FMC, what I want to them do is be able to hear the CW signal that you usually get at 30 miles or less out from most airports. I have read the section of the manual you refer to above  and i understand there is a filter marked VBR and that you set to range ® If i turn on the speaker button by the vor/adf dial i get morse code audio in two different tones bleeping the same code. This may bee correct as there are left and right markers, but in a default aircraft of the pmdg 737 you only ever hear one tone for of morse code. I have tried turning other speaker knobs on and off but to no avail. The manual does not appear to give enough detail on setting up specifically for hearing ILS audio, it is very generic.

Strangely I can find any one on you tube who demonstrates this process, and it makes me wonder if it is possible.

thank you for your support so far and I hope this make it a bit more clear about what I am trying to achieve.

Yes I am trying to find the audio ident of the ILS signal. I have now got it working where I can toggle it on and off, but I am getting two different tones of the audio that are transmitting the same morse code. Is this normal, I can see any way of just getting a single tone.

Thank you for the link too it was helful.

Mike, I must admitt that I have learned a bad habit of not verifying ID tones. So I put a B77L at the end of KLAS 25L and tuned 111.75/255 manually in the CDU, and when I turned on the audio I did hear two different tones. However, they are not at the same time, instead one follows the other so my guess is the lower frequency tone is the LOC ID (1020 Hz) and the higher one could be MM bleeding over because it has a 3000 Hz tone and that sounds about right to my totally tone deaf ears. Just guessing here.  I slewed the aircraft to the departure end of the runway where I should not hear the MM but it was still there. Interesting.

I tried to ID the same location in the B737 and a couple default aircraft and didn't hear anything so now I am really puzzled too.

Found the problem with not hearing ID in B737 nor default aircraft (Windows Control Panel Audio Setting set to Stereo instead of 5.1 Surround Sound, who'd guess that?). However, I still hear the second higher pitched tone as if from MM along with lower pitched tone from LOC. Only in B777. Anybody else?

I am happy now I have sussed how to hear the audio and that I am not alone with the 2 tones. However it would be good to know why this is,  so please all join in and help us solve this mystery.

Is it necessary these days? The ILS ident is displayed on the PFD anyway.

In the real world, the two tones are for the ILS and the DME. I forget which is which but it's normal to hear two slightly different tone idents on an ILS/DME.

Hope this helps,

I would buy that if the B737, or any other FSX aircraft or the C-414 I fly, also presented the two different tones. I've only heard the two tones with the B777.  I just finished a test where I used ADE to remove the DMEs from my home base KCRP, and put the B777 at the end of the runway and dialed in the ILS with CDU NAV/RAD. Confirmed the DME field on the PFD was '---' and turned on NAV audio and sure enought both tones are still there.  No DME, two sets of tones one after other one correct second one odd.

Does the runway have a reciprocal ILS?

Kevin M. Manley

Does the runway have a reciprocal ILS?

Nope, and if it did the BC would be inhibited and you would not hear two tones of different frequency. I am wondering if the OP and myselft are the only ones that hear two different pitched tones for ILS ID?? Any others?
