X Plane Saab 340A, performance hit?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just rejoined the flight sim community after many years after finally getting a HOTAS X52 Pro  , i.e. finally got something to use.  I have both X Plane and FSX (running on Bootcamp) and have been looking at the Saab 340A payware add on, seems to get excellent reviews and I love loads of documentation to read through and it sounds like its got that in spades.

I have a late 2012 iMac as follows and wondered what the performance is like with this aircraft in terms of FPS hit?

Processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX (1024 MB)

Many thanks, all input is appreciated

It's hard to say without testing on the very system...but the saab definately has a hit on FPS, especially due to CPU usage. There is a version for systems with little VRAM but you might get in trouble with your VRAM regardless of that. 1GB is really not much in terms of X-Plane.

There is an saab update in the works that will reduce the hit on the CPU but it is unknown when it will be available (shouldn't be too long, though).

Anyway, you should be prepared to reduce some of your rendering settings to maintain FPS (compared to default aircraft).

BUT...the plane is great ;)

Can you post a comprehensive list of your system specs?

As much detail as possible would be most helpful, then we can get an idea of the performance of the Saab.

I run the saab flawlessly on a q6600 8gb ram and a gtx285 with 1gb that is 2 years older than your pc.  So i think it should run quite well on your mac.  However i have not too high x-plane settings that are quite a bigger factor than the choice of the plane.  If you get 40fps in x-plane with an other plane it will be less of a problem than if you have 20fps on high settings

I have the Saab, and I can say of course, that it does give a performance hit, the second patch improved things a little bit. But, it's no surprise really, the cockpit is very detailed and if you like detailed aircraft with a learning curve, then this is 100% for you, and is, IMO, one of the best out for X-Plane at the moment. It's more than flyable though, but you may need to turn down your settings a little.

One of our local airlines here uses the Saab and the simulation, from what I've seen as a passenger, is very realistic, the sounds and graphics are top quality.

Thanks all, I am definitely interested and will be installing X Plane (again) tomorrow, will tune it to check out FPS first at appropriate settings and then consider it. I've traveled in this particular plane from Aberdeen to Kirkwall (in extremely bad weather) and would love to re-create the flight, thanks again :-)
