January 24, 201511 yr the practice approach thing is nice and something you see A LOT of in the real world. Would be nice to see that sometime. Gregg I use a different program for this, which oncludes all kinds of other goodies like weather and wind scenarios to throw into the mix. Excellent program. http://www.fsipanel.com/Products.html Rick Hobbs
January 25, 201511 yr Author Took a couple of flights today...IFR from KOCW (uncontrolled) to Wilmington, NC (KILM) (controlled). The departure went much like yesterday so, I guess, you just have to look up the frequency of approach and contact them once clear of the airport. The arrival was pretty standard and excellent. Took a second flight from KILM to Myrtle Beach, SC VFR. Just a couple of things: The phaseology it wanted after I departed was to tell tower what frequency I was changing to...definitely not standard. Also, I didn't even know approach's freq so I guess I'd have to look that up beforehand. Normally, I'd expect tower to say "...clear of the area, frequency change approved." or to switch me to approach. Or I'd just tell them I was clear of the area and they'd say "frequency change approved." (Looks like they have a TRSA so, I'd think they'd switch me to approach) Approaching Myrtle, the handoff to Jax Center was pretty late and I got very far behind, trying to get connected from Jax to Myrtle Beach Approach which put me further behind contacting tower. Anyway, it all turned out okay. Perhaps, as I learn what it expects, it'll get simpler. Overall, still quite fun. I've got some things to get used to. January 26, 201511 yr Gregg, are you filing VFR flight plans? VoxATC needs either an IFR or VFR flight plan filed or it cannot give you the full functionality it is capable of. Yes, I always use a flight plan if I'm using VOX. Gregg Seipp "A good landing is when you can walk away from the airplane. A great landing is when you can reuse it." i9 64GB RAM, GTX-5090
January 26, 201511 yr Yes, I always use a flight plan if I'm using VOX. I haven't flown a GA flight in like.. years.... I'm going to do a quick hop and see how the experience is for me then report back. January 30, 201511 yr Author So far, my verdict is that it's a good product though there are issues. I have had issues with arriving...both VFR and IFR. VFR handoffs tend to be late (a controller will, generally, hand you off to a receiving controller before you enter their airspace) and not allow me time to establish communication and pattern entry. So far, it seems like I'm being handed off after and I end up scrambling. IFR has been a bit hit and miss. The other day I was vectored to a GPS and the approach controller switched me to tower. After I switched it wanted me back on the approach controller frequency and then on another frequency I didn't recognize. Turns out, it was the departure frequency for the airport I left an hour ago. I had to land without ATC. That stunk. Gregg Seipp "A good landing is when you can walk away from the airplane. A great landing is when you can reuse it." i9 64GB RAM, GTX-5090

January 31, 201511 yr I am very interested in FSIPanel, how do you like it? How does it compare to Final Approach Pro?I can't speak for App Pro, but FsiPanel is a great practice tool. It sets up your a/c trimmed and configured, ready to go in seconds, at just about any approach location you want. It also has its own customizable weather maker so that you can set up any wind direction/velocity you want and any visibility situation you want.Regards, Rick Hobbs
