ELDERS REACT TO OCULUS RIFT

All the reports I've seen so far say Vive is better than Rift...

They seem to have gained the tech lead, but there is no clear winner yet...... I suspect other factors are going to play into the final outcome. Resolution, lag, interface.....

Even headset comfort!

I wonder if the Betamax/VHS wars are about to return...........

I am 68 years old, and have been into computers since the Sinclair ZX-81. Been into programming (C++, VB and even COBOL), and worked as a network engineer for 12 years. I am also A+ and Network+ certified. I have BETA-tested several versions of Windows. And I have been flying flight sims since Sublogic first produced one. My house is full of devices - I have two desktops networked for FSX, ASN and Aivlasoft EFB. I have a Kindle Fire, and my wife has a laptop, a Paperwhite and an I-Pad, all of which are wirelessly networked in my home. So you see, just because I am an old fart doesn't mean this new technology confounds and surprises me.

I am familiar with Oculs Rift, and would love to see it work with FSX, instead of TrackIR. I'll jump on the first chance to test it. While I am not of the home cockpit genre, I like as real an experience as possible. Because, you see, I am also a licensed private pilot - just the small stuff: single engine Cessnas and Pipers. But again, do not connect old age with senility. we all aren't pushing one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

You know, ten million people have watched that video and simply enjoyed it for what it was without reading a single other thing into it all, making the series one of the most popular on the web.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Seeing your hands inside the sim would go a long, long way in interacting with switches.

I'm eager for whatever works, but to be honest, I envision more possibilities offered by an AR solution, at least when a bunch of actual physical hardware is used.  But I'd be pretty eager to try out either one.

Of course, a full-on Star Trek style holodeck would be perfect.

I've never had a chance to try any of these devices, but I see lots of videos where people sway drunkenly and actually seem close to being sick as their body reacts to the experience. It makes me wonder how I will react when I finally get ahold of one.

Which I hope will be sooner rather than later as these companies compete for market share, hopefully dropping the prices quickly.

Truth be known, I'll bet thereare quite a few "seniors" up here. I started out up on Flightsim.com in the 90's and came over here shortly after. But I dropped out for awhile to take care of personal things, and rejoined the fray shortly befoere FS9 popped up. We may be old, but we definitely ain't feeble...yet! 8P

P.S. - my avatar ain't too far off!
