I am thinking about turning on the failures on the NGX to make things a bit more interesting, and keep me on my toes. I have a few questions before doing this.

 

I am thinking the QRH will need to be at my fingertips in order to solve the failures when they come up. Is this for the most part all I need to solve problems as they happen? I will need to print them out and bind them and have them by my side as I fly, so I don't want to print them if they're not going to help.

 

If a failure does happen, how do they get fixed? I can envision a problem inflight... a QRH solution to get on the ground... but then what? Typically I've been saving at the end of each flight at the gate, and picking up the flight the next day at the gate. If I land with a problem with the plane and get back to the gate... if I save and reload the next day the problem will still be there. Do I just reset the panel state and everything's good?

 

How does the failure algorithm work? Is it random? If its cumulative (more hours in flight more likely to get error) how does it work if I reset the panel state? Do the flight hours reset?

 

How often do failures occur? 1 in every 10 flights? 1 in every 50... 100?

Well I'll be... "Aircraft Maintenance menus in the FMS to service the airplane as you use it".

Yeah, lots of info in those manuals that came with the plane.

So I printed off the QRH here at work (two sided - don't tell my supervisor). Hate to see what the longhand reference handbook looks like hardcopy!

No need to print out the QRH. Study the layout and you'll start to see how the tables up front are organized to get you from an indication to a checklist very quickly.  Also note that right up front is a quick action list, take time with those items and become acquainted.  There are memory items in the QRH that flight crew have to committ to memory then use the book to backcheck.

 

Ah, so you have access to a printer at work LOL. Lucky you.

Thanks for the advice, but my Ipad is cracked and 1/4 of the screen doesn't work so I can't keep it in my pseudo electronic flight bag to access. So a hard copy is necessary. However I will take your advice about studying the layout.

Cost me $125 to replace my cracked iPad screen.  Cost less than a replacement.  Google a local source.

I've replaced the glass 3 times already (on the IPad glass fix black market, lots cheaper then $125). I have 3 young kids who tend to drop it many, many times. Until its 100% not working, I'll let it be for now till somebody drops it and it shatters completely.

My old and my next company use  rubber protective cases on the EFB ıPads.

 

We have proper QRHs obviously, and I fly elderly 1998 vintage NGs and brand new ones and every age between.

 

950hrs a year, mostly 4 sectors a day and I can honestly say I use the QRH 4 times a year. (The Sim...)

 

These 737s are very reliable!

It was quite easy to do.., just used a carpet cutter to pry between the glass and the frame and slice the adhesive. Kinda like the glass on your car windshield, the adhesive is like tarry doublestick tape. Pop out a few small wiretape connections, swap out the glass and done.

 

My Ipad is next, but the glass is on backorder

Yeah, I actually buy bulk glass for iPhones because I know my friends will jack them up. My sister is notorious for it.
