Can FS9 and Anti-Virus Progs Live Together?

Featured Replies

I just installed AVG Professional 7.0. And I'm wondering what I need to know with regard to keeping FS9 running well.So I have some questions for those who know;-Does anti-virus software have an "OFF" switch? I know performance hits can occur in FS9 if the anti-virus is running in the background. I really want to turn AVG off when I run FS9, but I don't know how.-Can anti-virus, and AVG in particular, interfere with add-ons like AI, TTools, AFCAD 2, and scenery files, thereby causing graphic anomolies or CTDs? Any other tips from the experts would be appreciated. Thanks very much!Rick

I use McAfee virus protection with no problem, but have to turn OFF Spy Sweeper, or I'll get small pauses every 10 seconds or so.L.Adamson

I use Symantec Coporate Edition AV (v10, previously v9) with no problems. It's lean and doesn't have bloatware like home editions (Norton) and hence no noticeable performance impact on FS.Keith

Hi..I have AVG anti virus installed and if you want to turn it off, just right click on the icon in the tool bar and select..Quit AVG control centre.Regards TH

I uninstalled Norton about 5 months ago and switched to Trend antivirus and even with everything on, FS9 runs much smoother. Even Dell, who always installed either Norton or McAffe is now installing PcCillin by Trendhttp://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desk...te/overview.htm

The flavor of Anti-virus really isn't important - I personally use Norton with a multi-user license covering all the computers in my home and my son's and daughter's homes.I would most strongly recommend that if you want to turn off AV, you disconnect from the internet while flying.None of the real-time weather or multi-user use IPSEC secure connections. They are live links into your computer. I've never heard of them being used to carry a virus or trojan, but.... it's like holding up a golf club during a thunderstorm. The anti-spyware - I turn mine off while flying - and make danged sure all instant messengers are shut off competely. The anti-virus program should only inspect data coming into your computer. (Of course you are going to fly not a time when your weekly full computer scan is running - or you are going to postpone that before flying)Purposely allowing data streams to dump into your computer without having AV check it - ain't smart.

i use avg 7.0 too,no problems here :)cheersJP.

AVG is the least system resource intensive anti-virus of them all and will not decrease the performance of FS9. (I've used Macafee, Norton, AVAST!, and AVG. AVG wins when it comes to low resource use in my opinion.)I have been using AVG for over two years after Norton Antivirus was using up so many system resources.I would leave AVG running, since I don't think you will notice any difference in performance of FS9 with or without ut running.I stay connected to the internet while flying FS9 to use ASV, and the web kneeboard to access content on the internet. So leaving my firewall and antivirus on is a must if I want my computer to be fairly well protected.Scott :-)

Only problem Ive ever had was with AOL's spyware detection that Ive since disabled. Im not 100% sure but close that it thinks chillikat.dll or something like that is bad and deletes it. This is a needed file for Active Sky.

Best of them all is AntiVir! Tried Avast, AVG, and Nortons, all cause some impact or worse, CTDs. Been using AntiVir for 4 years now happily. And it's freeware. If you want more security, use Zonealarm for a firewall, also replace IE with Mozilla Firefox and MS Outlook with Mozilla Thunderbird. You should be secure with that bunch installed!Del

Hi,I use NOD32, brilliant and easy with an incredibly small footprint.I've used it for quite some time now with no problems. The only disadvantage is that it is payware... But you don't get something this good for nowt!Regards, Stu.

If you're looking for a small footprint try F-Prot. I think it runs just one service and occupies only 2 to 6 megs of RAM. Best of all, it consistently gets a 100% detection rating in all AV tests that matter. A free time limited demo can be obtained here - http://www.f-prot.com/The only reason I stick with Norton CE is the real-time script scanning. Catches most spyware even before it gets installed on your PC. Not sure if the latest F-Prot has this functionality.Keith EDIT ADD : A good place to research AV software before you buy - http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/about/index.xml

Other than for screening email attachments, I haven't seen much value for antivirus. Maybe I just don't download enough stuff. Since switching email POP providers, I have yet to get an infected attachment, or turn up anything on a system scan.I ran ntfilemon and checked the logs after a FS session. Every file read first went through the AV program (McAfee). Maybe there is a way just to turn this off. I don't know how much overhead this behaviour causes, but it has to be at least some.I get some stops on scripts (such as when running AI Traffic Manager) which there doesn't seem to be any way to turn off without stopping the script screener altogether.scott s..

Try FSAutoStart. It shuts down any program you choose and then restarts it when you close the sim. Just don't be online with your AV proggie shut down. No telling what nasties will sneak in if you do.

I've been using AVG 7.0 for quite a while. I have no issues with frame rate loss or program interference.RegardsSpeck
