FSX Airplane Manager

Featured Replies

Hello all! Today I bring to the FSX community a nifty program that'll help you manage your aircraft.

Overview:

If you've ever used FSX with a lot of addon aircraft, you'll know that lag can be a problem. If only you could easily disable some aircraft while leaving others... That's exactly what this program will do! Once loaded up, it will scan your FSX SimObjects folder for aircraft, and then display them in a list, where you can then select them to be disabled/enabled in FSX. I've found it especially useful in FSX-SE during multiplayer sessions when other players' aircraft are substituted by your Addon Aircraft. I can't promise that it'll reduce lag for everyone, but it helped me!

How It Works:

This program works by scanning the SimObjects folder and listing off the names of the folders inside it. Then, when you disable an aircraft, it simply renames the aircraft.cfg file inside that folder to aircraft.cfg.disabled ! Then when you enable it again, it renames the file back! FSX doesn't recognize aircraft.cfg.disabled, so it simply skips over the entire aircraft.

The code behind it can be seen here: http://pastebin.com/WQHcuyWy

Extra Notes:

This program was made for FSX-SE, but will work with FSX-ME as well.

If you have any problems with or questions about the program, please ask! And I hope that you all find this very useful. Also, suggestions are welcome.

Tried to run this exe and it failed before even opening!

I am running Windows10, with FSX:SE installed on a separate drive.

Does one need to copy the program to a specific folder.

Also noticed the download file is only 10.5k, is this correct?

Hi there!

I'm assuming that the program doesn't even open? If this is the case, it's most likely because steam often fails to put an FSX registry listing inside the windows registry. As the program uses the path in the registry to find where FSX is, it crashes during startup because it can't scan your SimObjects folder. Luckily, there's a nifty tool that fixes the registry for you, which would be helpful not only in this case but with other programs that use FSX as well. The website is here: http://www.flight1.com/view.asp?page=library and there should be a download link called FSX/FS9 Registry Repair Tool. After downloading this, you can open it and will see a window with two buttons. In your case, you'll want to click the top button that says "Repair FSX Registry Path", and then use the file browser that pops up to find your fsx.exe file. Make sure that just in case, you run the Registry Repair Tool in administrator mode, just so that nothing goes wrong! After this, try running the program again! Hopefully this helps!

Also, it is normal for the exe to be 10.5k!

Work's beautifully for me with FSX (Boxed SP1/2). Haven't noticed much load time benefit but still quiet a few AC in my hangar to be fair.

Nice job.

If this program hadn't been working for everyone, I'd assume that it's not a problem with the registry, but since it has been working, I've taken one more step just to make sure it's not a registry issue. This time, there should be no need for registry fixing if you've run the program already. Basically, when I made the program, I assumed that there would only be one registry entry for FSX, but it turns out that there are two. I've patched the program to check both registry locations if one of them doesn't work. Anyways, new download link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ztw7b8xsrez97im/FSXAirplaneManager.exe?dl=0

Still doesn't work for me.

Do C# tools require runtime .dlls when run from client machines?

C# is included in the .NET framework which should be installed by default, but just in case you can find it here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17851

Hope this fixes it, but I'm still going to look for other causes.

The one thing I worry about with these type programs is some planes use panels from others.  I have used Panel=Off on some, and this can cause the problems, but I also saw issues with simstarter and it disables the texture line in the config.  The point it, I have had many troubles in the past with missions and free flight too because of having some liveries disabled and such.  I recall even downloaded addons planes actually using default panels of the default planes and when they were disabled the addon craft were missing panels and such.  I am simply suggesting being very careful because many planes aren't completely contained to themselves it seems.

I've got .NET 4.5 and 4.6 and their respective updates installed and these are said to be backward compatible with apps written for older .NET versions.
