Intermittent breaks in radio comms between CoPilot and ATC

Ray and Ron,

Thank you for the info on  logging. This is useful as I haven't made a log before.

Just a thought... I'm wondering if I may be the problem here. I have a habit of starting FSX with the aircraft on the runway, and then moving it onto a taxiway, prior to contacting Clearance( of course FSX is running before I start RC as Administrator). Could the fact that I'm not doing the start up and pushback from the gate position cause any problem?   After receiving Clearance, I then contact Ground for taxi instructions. Not  protocol, but I'm keen to be up up and away.

Andy,

Shouldn't make any difference not starting at a gate although purists would argue you should as you miss many of RC's features like  requesting push and start.

You're doing right by not moving the aircraft after starting RC. That would cause problems.

But try starting from a gate and see if that helps. Yours is a problem I haven't come across before.

The type of airport (controlled, non-controlled ground, clearance via telephone, and activating plan for non-controlled airports after take-off, etc) is determined by the frequencies present in RC's database. You can see these on RC's controller page. RC is not monitoring you until you start it (Start button) and you should be parked, avionics on, and proceed according to your clearance. RC will not recognize you taxiing off the runway if you have not started it so you can move it to a parking position before hand. You should have the parking brake on when starting RC.

For airports with ground control engines should be off if you are requesting startup and push back if that is the type of airport. For non-towered not controlled airports you will collect you clearance by telephone, by comms if offered from a nearby airport or FAA or flight information resource. You will have ten minutes in this latter case to take-off and contact center to activate your flight plan so be ready to go after your clearance is delivered.

Skipping any "zones" may lead to missed comms. In addition, not acknowledging an ATC command can stall RC and it may skip a step or get its command sequence out of order. If RC has stalled due to lacking acknowledgements it will not recognize your commencement of and reaching altitude changes, not crediting you with crossed plan waypoints, etc., but it may reactivate if you get within your destination approach zone. Your best clue here is to watch your progress on RC's inflight screen for the next expected waypoint and any altitude changes. (You can skip a waypoint credit if necessary by going to  the advanced menu 9, then direct to and choose a waypoint from the list.) Always navigate from your present position direct to the next waypoint in the status screen without returning to your original path in such cases.

Review in the tutorials in the RC43 manual regarding the use of NOTAMS.

It is best not to select prerecorded chatter in RC's options which is somewhat random as it can slow RC's audio performance with not necessary traffic chatter. RC will restrict communications necessary to ai present in your zone of operation geographically, operation window (ground, tower, departure, center, approach.)

RC's option to display text should be off if possible.

Ray and Ronzie

I've sent a log to JD, which he has acknowledged. Unfortunately he has recently had hand surgery, and is finding typing difficult, which is understandable. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for posting that Andy. I hope he can remember all that code. It's 10 years since RC4 was written and released. Rather scary really.

Just to bring this up to date. I've received an e-mail from JD.

He has asked me to do another couple of flights and submit log files. He asked me to enable Controllers 3 and 10, and turn off Pre Recorded Chatter. ( Ronzie mentioned the Chatter feature too).

All Controllers except Pilot Dean Barry and Co-Pilot J.C.Howell were selected, and I did not select Pre-recorded chatter for my latest "Log" flight.

I flew EGPF- EGCC last night and the problem began at the Clearance stage, with the aircraft still at the gate, and continued intermittently until the"Contact Tower" stage at EGCC.

I looked over the Log after I had closed RC and FSX, and interestingly it showed Controllers 3 and 10 not selected. This must have been the same as my previous Log to JD showed, hence his instruction to select them in my next couple of Logs.

It seems you were on the right track in thinking the Contoller voices files could be the source of the problem.

When I first asked for help on the forum, you suggested selecting all Controller voices which I did, and have continued to do. Initially it helped greatly, and then things started to go pear shaped.

As I previous said, I have uninstalled/reinstalled RC a few times to try to resolve the problem, but this has been done using a  download which I saved  18 months ago, and I'm wondering if there could be something wrong with the actual download file.

Hi Andy,

If you open the RC folder and go to the winwood folder check how many files there are in folders 3 and 10.

I have 1911 in both of which 1909 are wavs. The other two are a gif and txt file.

When you said the problem started with Clearance did you hear 'Manchester' enunciated or not? See if you have a_egcc.wav in folders 3 and 10.

It would be odd for the download to have missing or corrupted files. Let's see what your file count is like.

Hi Ray

Thank you for your reply, and sorry I couldn't get back to you until now.

I checked the winwood folder, and both 3 and 10 folders have exactly the same number of wavs, gif and text files as you have. 1911 in total, 1909 wav plus the other two. The a_egcc.wav is present in both 3 and 10 folders.

I've been a bit silly (senior moment) in not realising that 3 and 10 were not selected as Controllers, because they were already assigned as Pilot and Co-Pilot. I understood that the option was available not to have Pilot and Co pilot voices also assigned as Controllers. Could the fact that I have not also selected them  as Controllers be the problem?

Yes,  "Manchester" was enunciated in the Clearance from ATC.

Hi Andy,

Okay, we've established that you have the correct number of files in the relevant folders.

It's a relatively simple job to choose a different pilot and co-pilot ensuring they're not Dean or JC Howells. I'm not sure of the impact if you choose a pilot and controller from the same person but I don't think it would cause a glitch with RC. More a case of not confusing yourself with the same voice for pilot and controller.

Try again and by the time you get Clearance you'll know if it's working or not. Without sitting in front of your computer it's difficult to analyse the problem. It might help if you give details of the computer spec and what else you're running on it besides FSX and RC. Maybe it's overloaded but that would be unusual as RC is not a demanding process.

The log should also show the problem.

Hi Andy,

That looks fine with the exception of your SSD which is 90% full. I'm wondering if that is related.

Try running Disk Cleanup to gain some extra space. Right click the C drive in My Computer and select Properties. You should gain a few Gb.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the Disk Cleanup info. I had thought of doing that, but some folks on the net said not to do so on an SSD. Perhaps they were confusing Cleanup with Defrag.

However I'm happy to be guided by your goodself, and will run the Disk Cleanup

I should really be thinking about a second SSD. I use this pc exclusively for flightsim, but it's surprising how quickly space can be filled up with all the add-on stuff which is available.

Hi Andy,

They're definitely getting confused between cleanup and defrag. The latter is definitely not required for an SSD whereas the former is important and can free up several Gb. If you're happy your PC is otherwise stable use the option to delete all but the latest restore point. That will clear out a lot.

Windows uses a page file which can grow to quite large values. I suspect that is the reason for the problem. Any disk at 90%+ capacity needs swapping for a larger one or a second if you have the space.

Hi Ray,

Many thanks for that. I have carried out the Disk Cleanup procedure, and it  has increased the free space on the SSD by 4.6 Gb. I will "Cleanup" regularly. I will however have to get a second drive, as I hope to continue buying more add-ons from time to time.

I'll have a couple of flights over today and tomorrow and let you know how things go.

I greatly appreciate your assistance.

Kind regards

Hi Andy,

Hopefully the additional space recovered may solve the situation. That's quite an amount retrieved. Look forward to your next report.
