PMDG aircraft and stock navaids in FSX/P3D

Recommended Posts

Hello!

The information I have been reading until now regarding the navaids, the FMC, Navigraph etc. got me a little confused.

I understand that the FMC data of the PMDG aircraft can be updated from Navigraph, and up-to-date navigation charts can be used thanks to that fact, but the question is whether the aircraft use any of the stock navaids in FSX/P3D, like VORs, NDBs, ILS etc.

Suppose any of those navaids has been changed (updated frequency, position) in the updated FMC. The simulator database hasn't been changed since 2006 (as far as I know). Won't there be any conflicts? Are there any workarounds that you guys usually use in this case?

Some say that the PMDG aircraft don't use the stock navaids, some say that they actually do. So... which one is it? :)

Thanks in advance!

Good question. Both. Depends... just playing.

Navigation via the FMS in LNAV mode does not rely on stock navaids.  The FMS uses a navigation database external to the sim platform, which is available from navigraph and others. The advantage is huge because the data is updated every 28 days based on real world data so you can easily fly realistic routes and RNAV/GPS approaches.

Navigation via any radio, such as VOR or ILS, is going to rely on the stock navaids.  This is not a problem 80% of the time but there are ways to update the stock navaids including freeware tools provided by Theo above and installing addon airports to update new runways and ILSs.  There are still gaps but they are usually easy to overcome, sometimes you can't use a freq from a current chart because the stock navaid has an old frequency but it is not too hard to be flexible in any PMDG product.

Hope this helps.

I cannot use the navaids update mentioned above, because of this: http://www.avsim.com/topic/481971-update-of-magnetic-variation-and-navaids-not-effective/

Anyway, it is a relief to read that the PMDG aircraft is able to operate without relying on the stock navaids, most of the time. When the latter will be needed, I guess I will have to adjust a few .bgl files in the add-on Orbx scenery, so that the navaids correspond to the updated charts.

Thanks a lot for the answers!

Have a look at Airport Design Editor. You can use this to edit the frequency of any navaid or add a new one.

Hi!

I just posted the following answer to your original topic you linked to:

I have exactly the same ORBX products as you, and I also use the navaids updates from Hervé Sors, and they work just fine. It does not matter that the ORBX products are at a higher scenery priority than the "stock" FSX/P3D navaids files - the ORBX products you mentioned do NOT contain navaid data - nor do they contain mag var data, so they do not interfere in any way.

The only issues you might have would be with custom ORBX airports, which might overwrite the stock ILS data, just as any add-on airport might.

In short, if you indeed have just ORBX Global textures, Vector and EU land class, then there is no conflict. The navaid updates from Hérve Sors DO work.
