Monitor Suggestions? Must support 30hz and should be 28"-32"

Featured Replies

The title says it all. Any Suggestions? I can't seem to find anything!

Thanks

ROG Swift supports 25hz 29hz etc etc etc all the way up to 144, Gsync and mine is 28" @ 1440p. Best Gaming monitor I've ever owned.

Thanks man! So you can select 30hz from the menu as it is a native resolution? How does it do at 30hz?

I decided to upgrade from my 22" monitor recently and initially looked for a 27", 2560x1440 model. However, whilst the picture was excellent, the text in menus and on the desktop was very small - too small for me. After a lot of research I went for an AOC Q3277PQU (32", 2560x1440, 60Hz). Great monitor, large and well-built with a fantastic stand and a 3-year warranty. Picture quality is excellent with no dead pixels and I can see no noticeable flicker even down to very low levels of brightness (and I'm very sensitive to this type of thing). Connected to my GTX 970 card with the supplied Display Port cable. It's a new model and doesn't seem to be available yet in the US - I bought mine in the UK for the bargain price of £310! The same panel is apparently used in the BenQ BL3200PT and the Samsung S32D850D. 32" seems to be the sweet spot for 2560x1440 resolution as far as I'm concerned.

I just bought the Asus P287Q 28" off Newegg. It was on sale for 499. It can run run 29-60hz at 4K resolution.

I had to have 4K due to lack of AA in P3D. I run it 4K at 29hz.

I followed Rob Ainscough settings and set it up to maintain 30fps in all situations. Then I run unlimited with vsync and triple buffering on.

It's the smoothest I've ever seen in the simulator since I started back in 1988. I just can't go back to 60hz as the occasional stutter just gets to me.

Not everybody will agree or like it but for me it's smooth and stutter free.

That's really good to hear. I may just go swap mine out for yours. Does the mouse jitter at 30hz? My previous monitor would have a kind of "panning blur/jitter" and it was evident when moving the mouse as well. Then again, that monitor didn't natively support 30hz. I had to create a custom profile for it via NVCP. Sorry for all the questions, this is the only good info I've come across about this subject!

And out of curiosity, what are your system specs? just for comparison sake. I've been running 4k, but went just went with 2k. I actually like 2k, but wouldn't mind going back..

I think the mouse does jitter somewhat but I can live with that as long as when I'm taxiing or turning at low altitude its smooth.  If you go on Youtube watch some of Rob A. videos and you'll see what its like.  To be honest I don't like the 30hz when on the desktop doing normal tasks but that is the price I must pay for smooth flight in P3D until we can maintain 60 fps in all situations.  The computer is just for P3D anyway as my normal everyday business is done on my now retired Alienware.

I'm running a 6700K @ 4.7, Asus Z170A MB,  980Gti, 16g Corsair 3000mhz Ram, 2 SSD;  250 for OS, 500 for P3D.

My system has no problem running 4k.  I'm thinking of buying another 980gti for SLI but reading some posts here I'm not sure its worth it right now.  I love the 4k as I have no need to run AA which kills my framerates.

This is great info. Thanks man. My system is similar to yours, and running the same GTX 980 Ti. I agree about running SLI...I wanted to get another card, but it seems like it's not quite worth it yet. I'll probably pick up the same monitor and try it out.

i'm genuinely surprised that there would be a noticeable difference.  if the sim is limited to 30fps why would the refresh rate affect that at all? at 60hz it is displaying the exact same thing it is just refreshing every frame twice (and on an lcd the refresh is just an update, not a flicker on/off like the old days with CRT)..

not trying to start an argument or anything, just rather curious. as you pointed out the mouse and things like scrolling or window movement is noticeably jittery at 30Hz which would drive me crazy.. :)

cheers

I agree Andy but according to my understanding (I'm not an expert) if you fps fall below your refresh rate you get stutters.  So when your running at 60hz refresh you need to be able to maintain 60 fps at all times or you will see the "occasional" stutter.  Such as when taxiing around say FSDT KLAX you notice it will stutter during turns etc. or when 1000 feet agl in a pattern to land you can look out the side window and notice the terrain stutters.  I can maintain 60 at cruise but on approach to a major airport everybody knows the FPS will drop like a rock.  With 30 there is no drop.  I can run 30fps locked at 60hz but "to me" its still not as smooth as 30hz refresh and unlimited.  This is similar to running FSX running at 1/2 refresh rate in NVI.

So with a refresh rate of 30hz you only need to maintain 30fps and you will not see a stutter.  Its easier in P3D to maintain 30 in all situations than 60fps.  I tuned my simulator by running  patterns at FSDT KLAX 25R with the PMDG 737ngx in overcast rainy conditions  (I saved a metar file in ASN for testing).  Autogen settings are extremely dense other than buildings which I keep on dense.  When approaching for landing I can look out the side window and the terrain glides by without any stutter.  When on the ground there is no stutter when making turns during taxi.  Its hard to post a video of what I see as youtube and video recording software will always show some stutter.

**The one downside to this setting is if by chance you do drop below 30 the stutter from outside is twice the effect of a stutter from 60hz.  It can happen but only lasts a few seconds maybe once on a flight.**

Yes, the mouse jitter at 30hz takes some getting used to as it bothered me at first and took about a day of flying before I rarely notice it.  When I went back to 60hz refresh rate I couldn't stand it just as some here may hate 30hz.

Its really all in the eye of the beholder what you prefer.  Smooth for me may be jittery to others.

As I said I'm no expert on this matter just following other peoples advice on the boards.  There was a post on the P3D boards here about VSYNC which has both sides of the argument.  I bought this monitor basically for 4K but if the time comes where 60 can be maintained I can always adjust the refresh to 60hz so I'm not stuck at 30hz if I don't want to be.

watch this youtube vid on a pc that is at 60hz or better. If you're getting this kind of smoothness then there is no reason not to get this monitor... but the thing i dont understand is how his mouse moves so smoothly

That video was shot using 30hz refresh rate if I'm not mistaken.  That is how Rob runs his simulator.  You could check with him in the comments to verify.  This is the reason I went 30hz refresh and 4k due to how smooth his simulator was running.

But remember he is running fairly high hardware (2 Titan X video cards in SLI) but he doesn't think it affects much.

edit not in SLI according to his description.  Sorry.

Here is a blurb from his settings page:

These settings are intended for high end GPU(s) and CPU(s).   In most cases these settings will sustain over 30 FPS so they work well with VSync ON and a monitor that is operating at 30Hz.  If not using Vsync, these settings will range anywhere from 40-80 FPS pending the 3D scene being rendered (i.e. complex airports/aircraft vs. small airports and simple aircraft).
