Rippled skin repaint in progress

Featured Replies

Started repainting the Flight Replicas DC4M Argonaut/North Star to make it look like it's got pressurisation and stress skin ripples and a bit of dirt...

Lovely atmospheric shot! Obviously you've researched the subject matter, but were the ripples so uniform over most of the fuselage and tail? They weren't particularly concentrated in a couple of areas for instance?

Not a critique, just curious. Cheers!

I admit it's kind of an artist's impression - I based it on this and a few other pics.. I think that pic below is from the mid Sixties, not long before that particular aircraft crashed in Stockport (in 1967), so that would make it nearly 20 years old at that point since it was built in 1948 and had seen a lot of service with other airlines incuding BOAC, thus it would have had plenty of pressurisation and landing cycles on the airframe by that point and you can see plenty of evidence of that on the fuselage aft of the trailing edge and on the tail logo. Note how small the figures look in comparison to the aircraft incidentally - they could walk under the fuselage without bending down - that was a pretty big aeroplane.

Cool pic, Cheers Chock! The rippling does indeed look fairly uniform. Nice job! The exhaust routing on those Merlins must have stunted some performance surely - only 3 outlets and the crossover?
