New to XP11 - performance question

I started this topic to try and find the reason why X-Plane didn't seem to perform as well on my system as I thought it would.

And you got your answer: Of course it's going to perform below expectations if your baseline is decade old software.

I'm an experienced FSX user but new to X-Plane and I've installed the XP11 demo. I have a pretty good system (see signature below) which runs FSX well with a lot of commercial add-ons. I have a question about performance in XP11 as it doesn't see that impressive. I'm running X-Plane exactly as installed with no plugins and using the default Cessna 172. These are my graphics settings:

As nothing seems to be working hard, why is my FPS not higher? Is there some setting that I'm missing?

Well I have the opposite experience here local, find the performance far better as XP10 lol (but, then again I have new hardware )
My guess is we will see some performance optimization in the upcoming months...
XP11 is the first edition for me that is at the tipping point here local to use it as my default sim. (still using P3D and love the far more advanced airliners there...)
FSX left five years ago my HD and it served me 6 years well for that time (amazing to realizes that it's software form 2006 ;-))

A tip: reflection detail will kill performance at higher settings...
I think also XP would benefit from more VRAM then your GTX 970 with 3.5 VRAM fast and that 0.5 VRAM slow memory will kill your performance at higher settings...
Swapped my GTX970 for a GTX1070 day and night difference.

Cheers,

Fortunately, I have a thick skin, so no problems there - my hackles were raised rather than my feelings hurt. I talked about FSX regularly because that's what I'm familiar with and I was using it as a yardstick to assess X-Plane.

That's what many of my comments have been about - I'm retired and I've already invested a lot of money in FSX. As a result, I would have been prepared to start again with X-Plane if it offered something that, in my opinion, was noticeably better in enough areas compared to what I already have. To give you an example, I'm also interested in racing sims and was happy with what I had. When Project Cars first came out I thought I'd give it a try (you can get your money back on Steam, so nothing to lose) and my initial reaction was WOW! It definitely wasn't perfect but it was impressive enough without any add-ons for me to uninstall what I'd spent a long time tweaking and adding to. I was hoping for something similar with X-Plane but, for me at least, that didn't happen.

Thanks to all of you who've given me good advice and suggestions but, after many hours of testing X-Plane, I've decided to stay with FSX.

I read this topic and you are basically conplaining about xp11 performance relative to a 15 yr old program which doesnt have real time lightning,  math based  physics , slopped runways,  real roads and highways w traffic that look realistic and so on, out of the box. No ooms and ability to create insanely realistic scenery meshes that make orbx blush.   On top of it your video card is a gtx 970 which isnt terrible but your expectation for it to perform w 4gb vram is unrealistic.  I have a 980ti and it does ok but i cant run all the settings i want either,  even 6gb vram isnt enough in 1080p let alone 4k.  This sim seriously annihilates p3d except in the payware addon department,  where xp has some ways to go but there are amazing addons just not as many, but there are many developers on board. Also, ausyin stated his number 1 priority for future updates is perfomance, and part of this is switching to vulkan.  Im one of the guys who does one sim, i left p3d and fsx after 20 plus yrs, and dont miss it , at all. Xp is stable and fluid 95 percent of the time.  i know if i plan a flight i will complete it, unlike p3d where the vas issues always crept up. Have you seen what people are able to achieve w a more modern video card, go to fb and join the xp community there and see , the pictures and videos dont lie. You arent the first or last person coming here and acting disappointed w xp11. But have  YOU done what you should to get the results you want to achieve? You know the answer. I hope you  reconsider your position, xp11 is the future.
