February 27, 200620 yr Moderator I've been very impressed with the screenshots of GE but before I buy I'd like to see how the textures of southern England compare to the default which I find dreadful. England is a green and pleasant land even in winter but Microsoft in its infinite wisdom has decided it is a brown wasteland.Could someone please take a shot of Kent from FL250 and let me and others compare it to the original I've attached. Current date around 1500 local time please?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/143558.jpgThanks, Ray (Cheshire, England). February 27, 200620 yr There you go, Kent from FL250.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/143581.jpgIMHO though, the strength of GE comes out more at lower altitudes.Regards,Robert
February 27, 200620 yr Point to note btw: GE only enhances the textures, but does not change the landclass.Since the latter mostly defines what kind of area it is (desert, farmland, bushes etc.), GE might not help you much to make England more "green".A landclass add-on would be more suitable for that (there may be some for free around). However, I can still recommend GE. You just gotta know what it does, and what it doesn't.Regards,Robert

February 27, 200620 yr Author Moderator Thanks very much Robert. That's a big improvement. I agree with you that it looks better at lower altitudes but I wanted to make sure the large brown ground areas had been replaced. Still some brown but that's understandable as some fields will be left farrow over winter. Now where's that credit card?:-waveCheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). February 27, 200620 yr Author Moderator Hi Robert,Thanks for that clarification. I'll seek out some landclass. So that I understand things correctly...Mesh changes the elevations giving greater number of elevation points. I already have FS Global.Landclass determines the type of land. I have no addons for that.Textures changes the look of the ground with consideration for the landclass and terrain. Still using the default but will probably go with GE.Pity we can't have a series of shots showing how each can be improved over the default.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). February 27, 200620 yr Author Moderator Thanks Andre,Are you using the default landclass or 3rd party stuff?Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). Though, admittedly, it doesn't have THAT much an effect in flat Southern England. ;)Glad you decide to go for GE, I doubt you will regret it. :)Regards,Robert
February 27, 200620 yr Ray I'm using the default used Myworld LC2004 (2005) but not satisfied with that one for several reasons...Going to combine UT Europe when it hits the virtual shop looks like a great combination what I've seen in the Flight1 forums...Love GE the first addon textures set that gives that special realistic feeling...If you need more shots just ask ;-)Hope it's useful for your decision :-)Andr André
February 27, 200620 yr Hi All,here is a link to the Review I have made of the Ground Environment by Peter and Anthony. http://www.ifcglobalnetwork.com/review/ge/ge1.htmI must admit, I am somewhat bemused by some of the comments in here about how some have not really seen a noticeable difference since installing it. a few things that I would like to point out though, and they are, obviously, you will notice things that are somewhat more elevated compared to ones that are not, so, a good program to emphasise this is something like FS Global SE, but, again, you won't notice any real elevation in low level/flat terrain ground, and, don't forget that a majority of the real world agricultural style fields do tend to look somewhat drab and dark, this is a seasonal limitation of Flight Simulator itself, it is winter after all. The developers have worked very hard on this program, and in my opinion, have done an outstanding job. there really is only one way to see this properly, and that is to get it and look at it on you're system yourself as every system is unique with people having so many different graphical settings such as anti aliasing, anisotropic levels, even the brightness etc.
February 27, 200620 yr Hi Steve,Great review and nice screenshots. On the last page you list FE and GE as having the same price; I think they are different.Thanks,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___ Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page

February 27, 200620 yr Author Moderator Hi Andre,I fly 95% IFR but despite that the appearance of the ground at any altitude is still important to me. The screenshots posted by Mad Dog for the 4 seasons showing landclass differences don't appear (to my untrained eye at least) to make a signficant difference compared to the default. So for now, I'll investigate landclass in slow time.A single whole-world solution would be my preferred option for any landclass package. Hopefully one will become available. You've been very helpful - thanks. Ray (Cheshire, England). February 27, 200620 yr Author Moderator Hi Steve,Nice review - thanks. I see you're using FSG and GE. That will mirror my installation. I don't have Flight Environment but I do use AS6 which has some excellent cloud textures and very good frame rates. It's so reasonably priced it seems daft not to go for it.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). February 27, 200620 yr Author Moderator Thanks Mad Dog,The landclass certainly enhances the effect and sometimes it's difficult to establish exactly what's doing what. I've never really investigated all these packages and clearly I've been missing out because the scenery has never looked so good. Many thanks, Ray (Cheshire, England).
