Hi guys,

I have decided to upgrade my system as it is really pushing it to run p3d v 4.1 nicely. I would like some advice on what to upgrade first my CPU or GPU. The upgrade for the CPU I was going to choose was the core i7 4790k @ 4.0GHz. is this a good upgrade? I hope to be able to run the FS labs A320 fairly smoothly around 20fps.

CPU - Intel core i5 4460

GPU - GTX 970

Thanks guys :)

What about instead overclocking your 4460 to 4.0+GHz with a better cooler.. less money.. similar performance..

Bert

Isn't the i5 4460 locked, so can't be overclocked? Jack, are you looking at the 4790k so that you don't need to upgrade the motherboard?

I run the same hardware and have no issues with running the latest PMDG stable, A2A, ASN, Orbx, MilViz, or the Majestic's or FSL's output, albeit with sliders not maxed, as I am not a simmer chasing FPS rather opting for a smooth looking display, it suffices me.

At a later stage when the current Kaby Lakes drop in price, I will upgrade.

P3Dv4 is still fairly single-core performance dependent, the major feature of the i7 though is hyperthread which is of little use to P3D. As Bert said, if you can get the clockspeed up that will help a lot, I still get reasonable performance from an i5-2500k Sandybridge by virtue of over clocking it to 4.1 Ghz (from standard 3.5 GHz).

P3D does lean on the graphics card a lot more, but the GTX970 should keep up.

Could I possibly see your V4 settings please? Even with sliders down I only get average 12 fps even at small airports. Pretty much unflyable (This is the FS Labs bus) PMDG seems to run fine.
