November 10, 20178 yr Hey guys, when I enter the SID I'm using in the APP/DEP page in the FMC and execute I get a solid line that goes straight off the runway and doesn't turn it just keeps going straight, however once I delete the SID which for instance mine was "SYKES7" the navigation line turns and goes to my next waypoint, any idea of what's going on? I watched a Youtube video explaining why and what to do but I forgot. Any help is much appreciated!!

You should also have a chart for the terminal procedure you are using, and on that chart you may find that the instructions are fly heading for vectors to next waypoint. There are many DPs that provide routing from runway to first fix but most are still by vectors. Easy way to set this up is to use the ATC in your head and turn yourself towards that waypoint when safe. Dan Downs KCRP
November 11, 20178 yr The SYKES7 departures at Tampa basically do consist of simply maintaining runway heading (with a slight turn when climbing above 540 feet), with a note to: “Expect radar vectors to SYKES”. Unless you are flying online with VATSIM or IVAO, or using an add-on ATC program, you will not receive vectors, so will have to do it yourself. The word VECTORS should appear in your FMC LEGS page following the takeoff runway entry - whenever you see that word, it is an indication that the the course line will not connect to the first enroute waypoint of the SID. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to expand the range on your NAV display until you can see the waypoint SYKES, (which is southwest of the airport). Turn your aircraft in the direction of the waypoint using Heading Select, then execute a Direct To SYKES, after which you can engage LNAV. November 11, 20178 yr Author THANK YOU GUYS, I've been waiting for a straight up answer forever now, finally some people with the knowledge I need, thanks again! By the way, one thing.. can I just execute direct to SYKES before I even take off? that way I don't need to use the heading selector?
November 12, 20178 yr If you really wish to do that, go for it. Just go to the legs page and move SYKES up to the vector line. Captain Kevin Air Kevin 124 heavy, wind calm, runway 4 left, cleared for take-off. Live streams of my flights here.
