What the heck is going on here ?

Hi guys (& gals..)

I know that Avsim have had a few murmers re the 'new' display, where the screen white space (blue on Avsim) is a little, shall we say, too prominent, which leaves less space for the content. I myself have a huge problem with this - I used to use 'Ctrl/+' and 'Ctrl/-' to adjust my display resolution when viewing a web page. I have noticed lately that more and more sites have this same problem like Avsim - where the content 'fixed width' prevails.

Today I see that the BBC news site has now adopted this format. It is infuriating when trying to dynamically increase the font size for my tired 78 yrs old eyes that any adjustment appears to be limited to that limited area (width) of the display, where the side 'white space' isn't adjusted, resulting in the same reduced width for content, but now with a larger font. Wrap around makes the resulting display content appear a little ridiculous, to say the least. Unfortunately I also have this effect with Avsim.

It gives me the impression that 'white space' is considered far more important than the contents.

Am I being a little cynical here - surely it isn't a plot by monitor manufactures and the IPS software to sell larger models ?
I'm using a Dell 3011. Or am I missing something...

I'm not sure that the browser is responsible, since not all sites appear to give me this problem.  On many sites 'Ctrl/+' expands the whole page, not just text, where the width used to display actual site content doesn't have a fixed width.

I'm using the 'new' version of Firefox (Quantum). I originally thought that this was a browser problem, but I get the same effect on Avsim with Internet Explorer. Can it be the interaction between your current browser AND site software, I wonder ? I cannot seem to find a common denominator.

I even tried Firefox's 'Zoom' instructions, but that only adjusts text sizes, not the full screen.

I'd love to find a solution.

Bill

I switched to Chrome, I found some flaws in Firefox, it was much more prone to malware, same went for Edge, you really have to set your settings carefully before you go out and browse.  As for Chrome, everything gets larger when I've used Ctrl-+.  Cannot remember Firefox or edge.  Tom's benevolent picture looms prominently over this page when I zoom.  So if you haven't, try Chrome.

I am using standard Internet Explorer and I can zoom with Ctrl-+ without problems. Regards

He is correct in that the zoom only affects the center (white/gray background) are of the forums.  The blue side bands maintain their sizing and appear to be unaffected by the zoom controls.
