Confused on takeoff Procedure

Been almost 2 years since I flew the NGX, and just started again this past week. I am a bit confused on the actual takeoff procedure, even after tutorials and watching many Youtube videos. My confusion concerns VNAV and speed settings.  I notice if I set the speed at V2 plus 20, and engage VNAV and LNAV prior to takeoff, the Vnav light goes out after I lift off. I try and re-engage it but it won't engage. Should I not set VNAV and just use level change on climb out, instead. ?

Bob,

What's on the FMA when this happens? Do you see VNAV on the FMA? IIRC, the light will go out, but it will come back on at 400 feet when VNAV becomes active.

I will have to look next time. I saw the light go out, and tried to reengage it, with no luck.

This.  Set the MCP SPD to V2, it will take care of the rest.  Also as hinted, you should always look at the FMA to see what is going on with the automation.  You tell the MCP what you want and the FMA tells you what you are getting..

I believe that this is actually discussed in the Intro Manual. I strongly suggest reading it. Aircraft have quirks. We try to model all of these realistically. This usually throws the casual simmers (and sometimes even the seasoned ones) off simply because they think "it's a Boeing, I know all Boeings," or "I'll figure it out on my own and don't need to read an Intro," and then it does something odd which is seen as a misbehavior of the product when in fact...

Heck, there's even a section in there titled "the plane didn't do what I expected it to do." There's a reason we put that in there!

Will do, thanks. Been a long time since I looked at that manual.
