May 22, 20188 yr Cascadia – Washington & Oregon Saturday’s flight crisscrosses between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade range and features landings at a number of Orbx airstrips including Bill Womack’s just released Pearson Field in Vancouver Washington. Starting from Bowerman (KHQM) we fly 70nm east to land at Swanson (2W3). From there we will follow the Nisqually River valley through the foothills of Mt Rainier to Packwood (55S) located on the Cowlitz River. Heading southeast we skirt the east side of Mt St Helens before descending over the Swift Reservoir and then search out and land at Walter Sutton’s Private Strip (WA79). We will fly the Sawmill2 departure from Walter Sutton’s to the north before turning back to the south for very short hop to Goheen (W52). Just 13 miles to the next stop; historic Pearson Vancouver Airport (KVUO) on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Pilots looking for a challenge should try the Bridges13 departure. Fly under/over as many bridges as possible on the Columbia and Willamette rivers before turning west to land at Stark’s Twin Oaks Airpark (7S3). Continuing to the south we follow the Willamett river to land at Independence State (7S5), then head due west, over the Coast Range to land at Siletz Bay State (S45) on the Pacific coast. It’s a short hop (17nm) to Toledo State (5S4) before our final longish leg (57nm) to finish at Hobby Field (77S) in Creswell. The route is 332nm and a speedy plane will be needed to complete the route in the allotted time. I will be flying the Realair Lancair Legacy, but as always you are free to fly what you like.
