1m per pixel?

Featured Replies

Yes the demo is a bit buggy:), its free and beta software so I got my money's worth:)The one thing I really looked forward to( apart from the sound Improvement's ) was the promise of much higher resolution ground textures as seen in many very impressive screen shotsI Set the ground textures to the max and it looks far worse than fs2004 does flying the same area, and I paused and waited to see if the LOD would get better to no avail.Just wondering if the ground textures in the demo are at lower resolution to save space,FSX can render the ground textures much sharper and clearer I think.... and hope. Thanks for the demoJohn

Looking at the texture BMP sizes I believe that the demo max is actually 4.8m/pixel (5 on the slider).Maybe you can see some improvement at 2M.Too bad since that was one of the highlights.Dick near 5G8

If you fly the same area in fs2004, FSX ground textures look much sharper? If so I need to get new glasses:)cheersJohn

I only got sharper ground textures when flying the ultralight (i.e. the combination of the basic cockpit and flying slower must've enabled the ground textures to 'keep up' somehow). Flying with any other aircraft simply meant the ground textures were constantly a blurry mess, even after pausing the sim for a while. Do they use high res ground textures I wonder? (sorry, didnt bother to check the texture folder before when at my FS PC) This could be improved upon IMO. Same with the autogen...could have the slider to the far right when flying the ultralight (although my frames were still suffering...but it wasnt too bad), but certainly not with any other aircraft. I just hope some performance-related improvements are made before the release. Have to say though, even with the lower framerates, which I expected, FSX really does look fantastic when flying slow and low with the autogen cranked up...it really did surpass my expectations visually.

Yep... hopefully its a space issue, at its highest setting FSX can render what newspaper the tugman is reading:), guess time will tellWhat I did like was the sounds on the CRJ, very well done the engines sound like they are way behind the cockpit not in there with youStill using 2.1 sound cant wait to hear it in 4.1John

Tdragger, I see that the texture resolution slider goes all the way down to 7cm per pixel. Can you explain that? :)

Look at textures in DXTBmp. They are very nice 1024x1024. I esp like the night textures. Summer only. The water textures are very nice. I douldn't tell if the roads were improved textures or not.Looked at terrain.cfg. Seems like it is improved. Some options aren't explained in the comments. Setting widths of lines in meters, for example, is an improvemetn over the previous (though I guess that was also in meters, but when resolution is 4.8, setting meters is pointless).Unfortunately, couldn't get any scenery tools including MS TMFViewer to work. Hope it is just a case of recognizing a version number in the file header. But it looks like the file layout is the same.I notice in St Maarten there are many custom autogen annotations, but no photo tiles. I'm not sure you can do that in FS9? At least, I don't think I have ever seen any instance of that. Wonder if this is additive to the landclass autogen?scott s..

Be sure to READ the readme file. It explains a lot of things. This is a preview, not the finished product.

Yes I would like to hear the official statement on 7cm per pixel as well. My jaw dropped when I saw that. I'm all for making things as real as it gets but that just seems like overkill :-lol.

>Should be one meter. See my blog...Hope you don't mind me quoting this for everyone's convenience ;)"Ground textures don't look hi-res. Two things here: first, we don't default to 1m textures except for very high end systems-check the Terrain Texture Resolution slider in your scenery settings; second, we have a bug where we don't render the ground detail texture when you have your water detail set to any of the Shader 2.x settings--try a 1.x setting if your ground looks blurry (this should be fixed in the final product)"

Just a quick update, thanks for the advice about water shadersin relatation to ground texture detail.Anyway I turned water detail down turned off AI, Lowered aircraft details etcc. trying to give as much PC resourses to updating the ground textures. I can see clearly now the specs are on:), REALLY stunning ground detail ,what a difference 1m textures make even low down they look so sharp. With FS2004 I found setting the frame rate to unlimited helped a lot regarding texture updating, it would SEEM that in FSX it works the other way, the lower I set the target frame rate the better the sim keeps up with the 1m textures. Also noticed since turning water detail down, FSX seems to be generally running a lot better, less buggy. Now I've seen 1m resolution I cant go back ..I see a new PC in my near future:),I'm running a P4 @3.3Ghz ,2x512mb ram and a Geforce6800GT.Just wondering if the latest CPU/GPU hardware available will offer a worthwhile performance boost, not thought about about a new PC for a few years and I've lost track of whats going on with regard to the hardware front.cheersJOhn
