July 25, 200619 yr Hello everyone!I was practicing my landings this morning, when about two dozens of big wild geeze appeared on the runway. They are quite stubborn: once you pass them, they come out again, so at the last moment you have to decide whether you land short or long, depending on where they move to (sideways or up into the air) when you come down on final. Is this something we are going to deal with in FSX? :) I assume we may have bird strikes in midair but I haven't been any closer to a bird strike than today near the ground. I thought if we are talking about possibility of icy/wet/drenched runways, birds seem to be just another hazard on or near the ground. At the same time, a bird not trying to escape from aircraft is unrealistic so the question is if the AI birds will have "collision avoidance" behavior, "imperfect" just enough to always have some chance of a strike? Cheers,=S.V.=
July 25, 200619 yr Birds are the deer of the sky. Incredibly dumb and completely obvilious to the fact that some other bird might make propeller food out of them. Would be nice, if that feature would be in FSX, but somehow I doubt it. I do know that X-Plane has this feature in the latest beta 8.50 and it looks pretty cool.Pat

July 25, 200619 yr Wow, such a splash on MY windshield would really feel like a deer strike! :)=S.V.=
July 25, 200619 yr Yeah, the new X-Plane 8.50 Beta looks quite nice.A lot of features are quite similar to FSX. (traffics, birds, water reflection, etc)http://www.x-plane.com/beta.html
July 25, 200619 yr Not to drift off from the original thread, but X-Plane is sure a heck of a nice flightsim with the graphics absolutely beating a default FS9 system.Unfortunately, it is the little things with X-Planes that make the flying experience less "fun". Abysmal ATC, the lack of AI traffic and empty airports, inability to load historic weather data (unless every working flightsim pilot is willing to fly at evening/night) make me feel like I am back at FS2000.However, the flight dynamics (while often exaggerated, especially for VFR planes), sloped runways, bird strikes, balloons and the scenery is brilliant.Pat

July 26, 200619 yr Threads, like all other conversations can drift in a different direction and while they're sometimes not appropriate for a particular topic, they're still relevant and not inappropriate at all. After all, this is a feature that has been recently incorporated into another flight sim and some people might use this as an visual inspiration for an add-on for FSX. Someone could have also stated that bird strikes are already possible with FS2Crew for FS9 and while it doesn't really relate to FSX, it might be of interest for others.Pat
July 26, 200619 yr Hey that's cool! This sim has really come a long way. But something about it is still reminiscent of Fly II (not that Fly II was bad or anything) it just seems something is "dated" about the graphics and I can't put my finger on it...but it has potential that's for sure! Perhaps it's the texture quality or resolution? And the aircraft/boat lights are not that good :(Edit - here is an example of what I am talking about:X-Plane 8.x (2006): http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?act=At...e=post&id=19451Fly II (2001): http://www.gamespot.com/pages/image_viewer...1&sid=undefinedFSX (2006): http://www.fs2004.com/gallery/wm.php?pid=5712&mode=fullsizeThere's just something a lot more "sexy" and believable about FSX graphics wise... oh and P.S. the birds are there in the FSX pic too..not sure if we can put them near runways but my guess is yes!
July 26, 200619 yr >This thread is now completely inappropriate for this forum.>True...A popular X-Plane forum, has a general flight sim forum, that I've once and a while linked some excellent FS9 videos, that use 3rd party airports and aircraft. At the moment, X-Plane doesn't come close in recreating the 3-D look and alive feel that's created in these videos.L.Adamson
July 26, 200619 yr >>This thread is now completely inappropriate for this forum.>>>True...Sure, this is FSX forum, but I appreciate people bringing up comparisons with other simulators because COMPETITION is the only power that makes way for new features. I'm happy to know that Austin keeps up good work; that will make Aces and others in the field work harder. If someone mentions that FlightGear now has birds, would it be inappropriate too? Cheers,
