P3D4 Installed on SSD but using HDD?

Featured Replies

My PC has two SSDs and one HDD.  Though P3D is installed on an SSD, I hear a lot of HDD activity when at the end of the P3D starting process, just before it shows the main screen.  Does anybody know if this means that P3D is using the HDD?  If so, is there a way, other than removing the HDD, to have P3D exclusively use the SSD?

If you have P3D add-on's installed on the HDD, then it will be loading the scenery, etc from there.  Or perhaps your swap file is there.  Lots of possiblities.  I wouldn't worry about it as most everything concerned with P3D will run the same once it loads,  no matter the source.

Thank you @diajohn.  P3D and all add-ons are installed on the same SSD.  You think Windows has decided to use the HDD for its swap file, or is this a P3D specific swap file?  I would prefer all P3D operations are using the SSD.

True, but if there's paging going on with 32GB of RAM, something unusual is going on (assuming OP is using 64-bit P3Dv4).

If the OS is on the HDD, there are P3D files located in the Documents, ProgramData, and User\...\Roaming\ directories on the boot drive that could explain hearing disk thrashing.  Could also be a non-P3D process, perhaps search indexing, AV scan etc...

In my case, the Windows 10 and P3D is on the same SSD (953GB Samsung SSD 960 PRO 1TB), yet I hear the HHD (931GB Western Digital WDC) just before P3D's start screen appears.  Will look for something non P3D related.  Thank you all.

Good catch. I missed the 32GB part. Somehow 16GB stuck in my mind. You're right with 32GB there has to be something else going on.....
