Aug. 29th : the wing tip pic

Featured Replies

Extremely interesting for what it has and has not.

The bad : No car on the road, no steeple in view (there is a need to have churches in European sceneries !), some bizarre looking industrial buildings (untextured ?)

The good : Excellent colorimetry (no reddish or bluish overtone like we see on some orthos), great field textures, the feeling of being there, not a landmark landscape.

Great autogen!

This is Orbx TE at the Planet scale!!!

Geez, if this really is autogen corrected by the satellite image underneath it we're really in for a treat. Initially I thought this was just another photogrammetry scene, but having a closer look it doesn't seem te be one indeed. This is really going to make (VFR) flying absolutely stunning and realistic.

That's not photogrammetry for sure. Everything on this scene seems to be autogen positioned (really well-positioned) over the photoscenery.

I think so too except that I wonder what are these grey slabs close to the dashboard , along the highway (or railroad track). Untextured autogen or  raw photogrammetry outputs ?

Those will probably be storage facilities or transfer depots. They actually look a lot like that in real life too and are not that uncommon in Europe nearby highways.

You may be right.  I've never seen that along the highways I drive on but it doesn't say anything.  On a side note, when I see that  kind of horror disfiguring the landscape, I regret that public flogging on a public square  is no longer in the penal code 😇.

They could also be greenhouses. The autogen-software might have confused them with industrial facilities. That would explain their size.

Do we know the exact location of this over the wing pic?  It would be very interesting to compare it to Bing 3D view to see how it compares even though it's autogen and not photogrammetry.

MFS is going to be so incredible to fly in, simply breathtaking so far.

Could be, but these transfer depots are actually huge in real life also. Just close the Street View and turn on the satellite view in the link I posted. There's 3D data on that location, so you could also tilt the view a bit and view the actual shape of the buildings.

Not yet, but I think this one will be particularly hard to find, I've tried but not yet succeeded. There are some hints that might help us to find the place though:

  • The building style looks European I think, though it may also be in Australia??
  • You can see that some houses have pools, so they are probably situated in a warmer climate (southern part of Europe)
  • The area is really flat
  • There is a track nearby as well as transfer depots or greenhouses (which should be easier to see from lower zoom settings)
  • The lakes and river should also be easily visible from high altitudes

Anyone got more hints to help find the place?

Not that I‘m aware of. I combed through the area around Bordeaux without success. After 30 minutes I realized how utterly ridiculous this is and gave up.

The red patches around the lakes and the sports ground. But it's a Sisyphean challange.

And an airfield not far away, the aircraft has one notch of flaps down
