September 5, 200619 yr Ok, we all know DAFIF is going away next month and Richard from Navdata is now going with a different source which we will have to pay a little sum to get current AIRACs from that point forward. The upside to that is with the new source we will also get all SID/STARs with the latest AIRAC which is great because DAFIF was notorious for not having all the worlds SID/STARs (only updated ones military aircraft usually flew into/out of).So my question is, what about the websites that get us free charts like myairplane.com and others? Will we still be able to print out the latest procedure charts for free or will this go away as well? Its nice having all the procedures in your FMC but if you dont have the chart...your only halfway there IMO.One other question..anyone know the price yet for the new AIRAC service? Eric
September 6, 200619 yr I saw mentioned that a monthly download would cost "a few credits". The catch is that the minimum credits you can buy is 100, and they expire in 6 months if you don't use them.100 credits are for 10 euros, but 1000 credits for 40 euros.I think that they are banking on your also wanting to download their charts. I have looked at the Navigraph charts, they are very high quality, and would be great for those out of the way places.Minimum cost for a year would be 20 euros, which would buy you all the charts you ever needed.* Orest Orest Skrypuch President & CEO, UVA www.united-virtual.com
September 6, 200619 yr Commercial Member I may be mistaken, but the NACO charts aren't being discontinued are they? That's not part of the DAFIF... Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
September 6, 200619 yr 20 Euro for unlimited charts all in one location for the whole world is pretty good actually. Eric
September 6, 200619 yr >I may be mistaken, but the NACO charts aren't being>discontinued are they? That's not part of the DAFIF...No. And it appears most of the DAFIF charts of US airfields are now on the NACO site.scott s..
September 6, 200619 yr Hello, the situation for the US may be a little bit specific, but on a worldwide scale it Cheers, Martin Georg/EDDF Contributing editor, FS-Magazin
September 6, 200619 yr The fact does remain though:Freeware fun days are slowly getting over. Of all the things related to FS, which I now use, only these dont take money from me...1. VATSIM. Dont go to Ivao often2. AVSIM. Dont visit other websites like flightsim or simflight etc.I am not against payware but I think the leap from freeware to payware has been moe drastic than improvements in FS over versions!!The "hobby" part is slowly gone! The day is not far when avsim will have to charge a fee and so also vatsim.

Why?Well, because the quality standards nowadays are much different than they were a few years ago. A few years ago, a good visual model and nice 2d panel was enough for a good product - something which can be done as freeware by hobbyists with some effort.Today, people want more. A lot more. They want a nice VC, custom gauges, authentic system modelling and all the bells and whistles which make up a good add on product. Could something be done as freeware? Probably - check out the iFly 744 whicht might very well be the best freeware add-on ever done and comes close (or better than that) to some commercial products. But this stuff is just way too time consuming. Writing a good manual alone can take dozens of hours, not to speak about programming a almost fully working FMC, Also, modeling and painting is much more work today than it was back in the FS98/FS2000 days. There are still a lot of very good freeware projects (meljet, posky etc..) - people who invest a lot of time into their work and still don't charge for it.>The "hobby" part is slowly gone! The day is not far when avsim>will have to charge a fee and so also vatsim. Well, even if it costs money, it is still a hobby. Almost any hobby does eat up your cash :)
September 6, 200619 yr Author I've obtained other than enroute charts from VATSIM resources. At time it is best to go to the regional chapter and use their resource links. The Italian and SAG (Switzerland, Austria, Germany) charts are very nicely designed and provided.
