What is going on with FSX textures?

Featured Replies

Please compare the "desert" texture from Microsoft screen shot and the typical one posted in beta screen shots. Its almost criminal on how different they are. What is going on?Well, I compressed the shot taken by microsoft too much, so its very small, but most of you have seen it anyway. The sand and mountains look so real comparing to the first pic which is a beta screen shot.

I agree! Some areas of the beta scenery looks like someone had spread a dull blanket over it! First I thought my scenery settings were wrong! On the other hand, in some other areas the FSX scenery is quite amazing!Haraldh

MS screen shots came before Beta!!! Beta is for trouble shooting only! Besides Microsoft should not lift NDA (thus allow screenshots) when they look so much worse than their promotional material! This is terrible for the product!

I don't get it. The two images are taken at different places, times of day, settings...

>I don't get it. The two images are taken at different places,>times of day, settings...Hello Mike, Actually, there are a *LOT* of desert textures everywhere during the current time & season. I mean on mountains & grassy plains all over the U.S. With your response, does that mean you guys think that it's *NOT* an issue or are we seeing an incompleted texture set as Bill is suggesting? I will go and document a whole bunch of areas later.

Here are some examples I am seeing - all current day & season (Sept. 7)Pine, Idaho - 1U9http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155817.jpgDenver, Colorado - KDENhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155818.jpgGranby, Colorado - KGNBhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155819.jpgBoise, Idaho - KBOIhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155822.jpgAnd then again, there are some *BEAUTIFUL* mountains! East of Chatanooga, Tennesseehttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155830.jpg

I wouldn't worry too much about the textures. Once Peter Wilding gets working on GE and FE Pro for FSX provided he decides to do it we will be in for a treat. Not that the default textures look bad but my FS9 GE Pro look better to me. Only seen the demo so I can't say for sure about the rest of the world only a few carribean islands and all the screenshots.Regards, Carlos

Here is a place I live in the general region of the world of and it's DEFINITELY not a desert. As well, the water is WAY too turquoise too much in the Gulf.Key West KEYW:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155834.jpg

well you are right mike, but one still looks very fs98ish and the other FSXish. does that make sense?

textures in the first pic make me cring! Ouch!

oh gosh I really hope the final FSX release does not have that cartoon water :(

A good point has been raised here and one I have noticed for some time. In general I think it is fair to say that from the whole group of screenshots displayed on this website since the beta came out, the best ones are still from FS9. Now granted most of those most likely were taken from systems that contained third party add-on's, but the the main culprit of the difference has been these "grassy/sandy" textures and off-color water as displayed in this thread.I hope the people of Aces are aware of this, but frankly from their response here (as challenged), I think it's more like "WYSIWYG.I am confident the 3rd party developers will be all over this one !Bob (Lecanto, Fl - but now Las Cruces, NM)

Hi there,it's important to realize that textures are just one part of the puzzle. It's the land class files that determine where a specific texture (and its associated autogen) gets placed and the seasons file that determines the seasonal variant used. See also my post in this thread: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...3&page=5#347421That being said, based on a close inspection of the ground textures and autogen files included in Beta 3 it appears to me that we're not seeing the final version yet. Nevertheless, expecting any major changes between Beta 3 and the retail version is probably futile.Cheers, Holger

But what about their videos and screen shots! They look so good comparing to the ones from Beta!
