What do we know about smooth video performance?

Featured Replies

With what appears to be a massive increase in visual complexity w/ changes to scenery & weather do we have any idea what performance will look like?  The video re weather is very quite choppy if you pay attention and that can't be capture and playback related these days!

They said it was speeded up so that probably accounts for the choppiness.

Current simulators look to be only be really utilising a single core... so if the code has been rewritten enough, its looks like we'll see a significant increase in performance if all can be utilised. Plus better interfaces to hardware etc.

Several of those who were invited to the global preview event said it ran smoothly at high visual quality. I think the developers also said they were getting around 42 FPS in true 4k and about double that at upscaled 4k. That's just my memory, though. It appears their goal is to have the sim running at 60 FPS at 4k at high visual quality, based on what I keep reading.

But at this time I think there's really no point in trying to make out how the new sim will perform. We'll see.

I'm really hoping that there are some properly working options for frame limiting in-game in order to up the visuals to the absolute max whilst keeping a smooth and achievable 30fps if wanted. No affinity masks or messing around. Simply a way of balancing, especially for lesser powered rigs.

I think all you need to know is that it's coming to X-Box. I have every faith it will be very well optimised.

To be fair, it's probably coming to Xbox Scarlett only which (I think) releases next year in the fall and not to current versions. If I'm briefed correctly on the specs of the Xbox Scarlett it's very powerful (on par with today's higher end computers) and way more so than the current version so I think the current Xbox doesn't hold up as a benchmark. Phil Spencer of Microsoft also said the sim is coming to PC first and foremost and "then we'll need to figure out a way to get it to the Xbox" (quote not word by word) which suggests there isn't much more currently than the bare plan to get it to Xbox further down the road.

That said, IIRC the developers said the sim would actually be optimized for lower end systems. Plus, it's 2019 so you would think the sim would do way better than FSX or even still P3D in terms of performance even with a load of eye candy so I agree with you.

According to the following, only the data will be streamed and it will be processed on your local computer. So, it seems to me that we really don't know how smooth or if one needs a Cray supercomputer to process it. See https://www.helisimmer.com/articles/how-microsoft-flight-simulator-streaming-works

Running smoothly at 30 FPS or less seems to be a feature peculiar only to some current flight sims. 30 FPS with a modern game engine looks like a slide show.
