Option to be online, but use only default scenery...

Featured Replies

For guys like me who can perfectly live with NILL autogen, or at most airports only, I would really like to have a option to continue interacting with weather and air traffic feeds without having to get streamed scenery areas.

This way I could still profit from other services ( online ) without the burden - for my really slow home net - to have to experience streaming while "flying"...

Based on what's been shown so far, and what seems to be the general approach to scenery in this sim, I would guess there won't be a completely non-streamed option that would place the entire world's terrain mesh and just the airports on your hard drive. That's just a guess though; we don't know what the options will be in the final release.

What you will be able to do, according to reports, is cache areas you fly frequently so they don't have to be streamed every time you fly over that area. That should help those who don't have enough bandwidth or have monthly data caps.

Any idea concerning the Weather and ATC in that option ?

Well, based on their interviews, they said the big difference between the streamed scenery and the offline mode is the orthophotos and photogrammetry. Houses, trees, roads, coastline etc would be the same on both modes.

They didn't specifically say anything about the mesh, but I'm sure it will be stored on your own PC, just like the coastline data.

Interesting point.

Even if there isn't an option in the sim, I suppose you could always block it in the firewall or by some other network trickery.  Somebody's sure to come up with a script to do that.

Let's hope the standard install comes with a full World Scenery like in past versions, even if with basic detail, and there's an option to not use streamed scenery while enabling online weather and other stuff like traffic, should we want that...

Streamed scenery is completely out of question in my case 😕

Pretty sure they said there is a base world which you get with the sim and the level of detail is streamed on top of that.

There is also the option of pre-caching the scenery.

It's already confirmed that the default scenery, even on offline mode, will cover the whole world and have all the buildings, trees, roads etc (not the photoimagery or photgrammetry). Also, the default textures will try to match the satellite imagery. They didn't gave a lot of details on how it would match, but I think they will match colors and type of terrain.

About the settings and something like you asked, we will have to wait and see. But, from my point of view, it would be easier to implement that.
