Crossing the Red Kickoff – Moths over Melbourne

Crossing the Red Kickoff – Moths over Melbourne

As a prologue to crossing Australia, the kickoff flight will feature a low and slow tour of the Melbourne region of Victoria.  Starting from Avalon (YMAV) we will fly along the edge of Port Philip Bay to the docks at Williamstown, then turn and fly very low along the Yarra River into the heart of downtown Melbourne following the turns of the river past many notable landmarks. We exit downtown and fly over the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) then continue to east over suburban Melbourne before landing at Lilydale Airport.  The route continues south towards Port Philip Bay and over Sandown Racetrack before and our next stop at Moorabin Airport.  Departing from Moorabin we fly back towards downtown Melbourne by way of Luna Park at St Kilda Pier.  We cross our prior route of flight at a 90 degree angle and fly low over King Street (single file, please) and then on to Essendon Airport for a touch and go.  The final stop for the Tiger Moths will be Melbourne International which will conclude the prologue event.  If time permits we will switch to faster aircraft for the 50 mile leg to Mangalore.

The flightplan with a Pilots' Guide can be found here.

Aircraft

The prologue is 74nm. We shall fly at a leisurely pace. The prologue is designed for Tiger Moths and Avro Tutors, any aircraft capable of about 100kts cruise will do nicely. Of course, you should fly whatever you like. I shall take Ants Tiger Moth Pro in the red G-ACDA  livery.  Once we reach Melbourne International (YMMN) we will switch into faster (200+kts) aircraft such as the King Air or equivalent.

Mirth incidenally, is a reference to Peter Seller's Inspector Clueseau in The Pink Panther. In no way is it finding anything amusing about the predicament Australia finds itself in.

The best Pink Panther movie of them all!

Mirth, you know mirth...sort of like minky, chimpanzee minky.
